Samarkand State Medical University (SSMU) is the oldest medical institution in Uzbekistan, founded in 1930 when the Uzbek State Medical Institute was established by resolution of the Council of People's Commissars. Located in the ancient city of Samarkand — one of the most historically significant cities on the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — SSMU has spent nearly a century training medical professionals for Uzbekistan and the broader Central Asian region. It is the medical university with the highest number of Indian students in all of Uzbekistan.

The MD programme at SSMU runs over six years in English for international students, covering foundational and clinical medical sciences across five years of integrated academic training, followed by a mandatory one-year hospital internship. SSMU's clinical base is extensive, including clinics No. 1 and No. 2 with 375 and 200 beds respectively, equipped with modern medical technology and serving as the primary teaching hospitals for clinical rotations. All medical and diagnostic institutions of Samarkand additionally serve as clinical training bases, giving students broad and genuine patient exposure.

SSMU has a faculty strength of 712 scientists and teachers — including 58 professors, 65 doctors of sciences, 177 doctors of philosophy, and 152 associate professors — an academic depth that rivals institutions of far greater resources elsewhere. Of particular relevance for Indian students is SSMU's full-time Indian faculty of more than 50 teachers, who teach core subjects and provide targeted preparation for FMGE/NExT, a feature unique to very few Uzbek institutions. This Indian faculty presence is frequently cited by enrolled students as a decisive factor in their academic success.

However, prospective students must be aware of a critical regulatory development: the NMC issued an advisory on April 1, 2026, specifically naming Samarkand State Medical University among institutions where concerns regarding FMGL Regulations 2021 compliance have been raised. Issues cited include student intake beyond approved capacity and concerns about training standards. Students and parents are strongly advised to verify SSMU's current compliance status directly with the NMC at nmc.org.in before making any admission decision or paying any fees.

Samarkand is one of the most beautiful cities in Central Asia — a living open-air museum of Islamic and Silk Road architecture including the Registan, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, and Shah-i-Zinda necropolis.
