The Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, known widely as ICBAS, is a medical and life sciences school of the University of Porto, established in May 1975 in the aftermath of the Carnation Revolution. It was created at the initiative of a group of distinguished academics from the University of Porto, including Corino de Andrade, Ruy Luís Gomes, and Nuno Grande, who were inspired by the thought and legacy of Abel Salazar; the Portuguese physician, scientist, and artist after whom the institute is named. From its very first days, ICBAS was built on a principle that was, at the time, genuinely different from how most medical schools in Portugal operated: that a doctor who only understands medicine does not even understand medicine. This phrase, borrowed from the Spanish physician José de Letamendi and adopted as the school's founding motto, still greets students in the main lobby of the original building and continues to define the educational philosophy that shapes every year of the programme.

Medical training at ICBAS formally began in 1976, and what made it stand out immediately was its rejection of the traditional, lecture-heavy, passive model of medical education that dominated Portugal at the time. From the outset, the institute emphasised multidisciplinary teaching;  drawing from the exact sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, and medical sciences together, delivered by teams rather than lone professors working in departmental silos. This balance is not incidental to ICBAS; it is the architectural core of its curriculum. Students at ICBAS are not expected to encounter the human sciences as afterthoughts to clinical science; they meet them as integrated, full-weight subjects from the very beginning of the programme.

ICBAS sits within the University of Porto, which is ranked 298th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025, making it one of the highest-ranked universities in the Iberian Peninsula outside Madrid and Barcelona. Since 2011, the institute has been housed in a modern complex dedicated to Health and Life Sciences on U.Porto's Campus 1 in central Porto, a facility it shares with the Faculty of Pharmacy. This campus location is different from some older medical schools in Portugal that operate across dispersed sites; ICBAS benefits from a concentrated, purpose-built environment where students, researchers, and support services coexist in close proximity.

The primary teaching hospital affiliated with ICBAS is the Santo António Local Health Unit (formerly the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto and the General Hospital of Santo António), which has been ICBAS's nuclear clinical training institution since 1980. It is one of the largest and oldest hospitals in Porto and handles a broad range of complex tertiary-level cases. The hospital's relationship with ICBAS is structural, not just administrative; clinical faculty who teach at ICBAS are often practising clinicians at Santo António, meaning students learn from doctors who are actively managing real, high-complexity patient cases. Beyond Santo António, ICBAS has established formal protocols with the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto, the Hospital de Magalhães Lemos (psychiatry), the Local Health Unit of Alto Ave, the Local Health Unit of Tâmega e Sousa, private sector hospital networks, and numerous primary health care centres operating under a cooperation protocol with the Northern Region Health Administration (ARS Norte). This network is broad enough that students encounter meaningful variety in their clinical years.

The six-year Integrated Master's in Medicine (Mestrado Integrado em Medicina) at ICBAS is structured in accordance with the Bologna Process and follows EU ECTS credit standards. One of its notable features is that the new curriculum; which has been progressively introduced; explicitly integrates early clinical contact from the opening years of the course. Students are not kept purely in lecture theatres for three years before seeing a patient. Clinical problem-solving, semiology, and patient-facing activities are introduced progressively from the pre-clinical years, with the full immersive clinical experience intensifying in Years 4 and 5 and culminating in a dedicated sixth-year supervised clinical internship across all major medical and surgical disciplines. This approach is something ICBAS has pushed as part of its deliberate effort to train doctors who think clinically from early on, not only after pre-clinical knowledge has been absorbed in isolation.

For Indian students, ICBAS represents a legitimate, EU-regulated medical degree pathway at a University of Porto institution; a combination that few countries outside Western Europe can offer at a comparable cost of living. The degree earned at ICBAS carries full recognition under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC, which means ICBAS graduates are eligible to seek medical registration across all 27 EU member states without additional licensing examinations in those countries. For NMC (India) eligibility and NExT examination purposes, Indian students must verify ICBAS's current listing at nmc.org.in before applying, as recognition status should always be confirmed at source rather than assumed. ICBAS is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), and its degrees are ECFMG-eligible, meaning a USMLE pathway to US residency is available. GMC registration in the UK via the PLAB route is also a recognised pathway for ICBAS graduates.

The language of instruction is Portuguese. B2/C1 proficiency in European Portuguese is required before entry, and this is a practical reality that international students must plan for seriously. A six-to-twelve-month intensive language preparation course before enrolment is strongly recommended for students from non-Portuguese-speaking backgrounds. Porto itself; where ICBAS is located; is consistently rated among Europe's most liveable cities, with living costs that are meaningfully lower than Lisbon, London, or most of Northern Europe, making the overall cost of studying at ICBAS significantly more manageable than higher-profile alternatives in Western Europe.
