Kursk State Medical University (KSMU Kursk)

Kursk State Medical University has a distinction that is arguably unmatched by any other Russian university serving Indian MBBS students: it was the first university in Russia to launch a full English-medium MBBS programme for foreign students, beginning approximately 25 years ago, in 2000. Every other Russian medical university that subsequently developed English-medium programmes for international students effectively followed a path that Kursk pioneered. This historical primacy has had lasting effects: Kursk has the most mature English-medium medical programme in Russia, with the most refined course materials, the most experienced English-speaking faculty, and the most well-developed international student infrastructure of any Russian institution.

Founded in 1935, KSMU Kursk is one of the oldest government medical universities in Russia, having operated for 91 years. It is located in Kursk, a city of approximately 450,000, approximately 500 kilometres southwest of Moscow, that is historically significant as the site of the largest tank battle in history (the Battle of Kursk, 1943). The city offers a manageable, student-friendly urban environment with lower costs than Moscow, good road and rail connections to the capital, and a well-developed international student community built over 25 years.

KSMU Kursk currently has over 5,000 students from 50+ countries, with a long-established Indian student cohort that has developed through 25 years of English-medium operations. The university is recognised by NMC (India), WHO, ECFMG (USA), GMC (UK), and other global medical bodies, and is listed in the WDOMS. Clinical training begins from Year Two, a year earlier than at many other Russian universities, giving Kursk students more cumulative clinical exposure over the six-year programme. The university operates 6 dedicated hostels, 3 of which are exclusively for international students.

Total 6-year MBBS fees at Kursk are approximately ₹34.54 lakh, with annual tuition of approximately ₹4.52–5 lakh and hostel fees of approximately ₹82,932 per year. February and September intakes are both available one of only two universities on this list offering a February intake, giving students who miss the September window an immediate alternative.
