Perm State Medical University named after Academician E.A. Wagner is one of the oldest and most distinguished medical universities in Russia. It was founded on 22nd September 1916, making it over a century old, and has operated continuously through the Revolution, two World Wars, the Soviet era, and into the modern Russian state. The university bears the name of Evgeny Antonovich Wagner, an outstanding Soviet surgeon and Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, who served as rector of the university for many years and was instrumental in building it into the institution it is today.
PSMU is located in Perm, the administrative centre of Perm Krai and the Volga Federal District, a city of approximately 1 million people on the banks of the Kama River in the western Urals. The university has over 500 highly qualified teachers, including doctors, medical scientists, and senior clinical specialists. More than 50,000 doctors have graduated from PSMU over its century-long history, and the university currently has around 3,000 students from 25 countries enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes. For Indian students, PSMU has been admitting and training students for MBBS since 2015, when it launched its English-medium international programme.
The MBBS programme at PSMU has been taught in English since 2016 and is recognised by NMC India, WHO, WDOMS, and ECFMG. The ECFMG certification opens eligibility for USMLE in the USA and PLAB in the UK in addition to FMGE/NExT in India. Clinical training begins from the second year at university-affiliated hospitals and clinics, making PSMU one of the few Russian medical universities to introduce clinical exposure this early in the programme. Over 1,500 international students, including hundreds from India, are currently enrolled.
Annual tuition at PSMU is approximately USD 4,500 to 5,500 per year, placing it in the mid-range of Russian medical university fees with a degree carrying strong international recognition. Hostel accommodation is furnished, close to campus, and Indian food is available in Perm through restaurants and community mess arrangements. Living costs in Perm are moderate, typically running around USD 100 to 150 per month for food, transport, and personal expenses.
Perm is a significant industrial and cultural city in the western Urals, with a population of approximately 1 million. It sits at the geographic boundary between Europe and Asia, a fact reflected in the city's character. Perm has an international airport with connections to Moscow, a well-developed city infrastructure, and a cultural life including the famous Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, one of Russia's oldest. The city is also known as the gateway to the Ural Mountains, and the surrounding landscape is dramatic and varied.
PSMU's campus has sports clubs, a university gymnasium, and recreational facilities, and cultural and sports events run throughout the academic year. The university is recognised by MSHE, WHO, NMC, WDOMS, and ECFMG. Its research output, clinical depth, and century-long history make it a credible and well-regarded choice for Indian students seeking an NMC-approved MBBS in Russia's Urals region.
