Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) is the premier Statutory Autonomous Institute and University in Jammu & Kashmir. It was established in 1982 by the J&K State Legislature Act and functions as a dual entity: a super-specialty hospital and an academic institution.
SKIMS holds the unique status of being a Deemed to be University under the UGC Act (since 1988), granting it the academic autonomy to conduct its own examinations and award its own medical degrees (MBBS, MD/MS, DM/MCh, etc.).
