The School of Rural Medicine at the University of New England (UNE) is a cornerstone of the Joint Medical Program (JMP), a partnership between UNE and the University of Newcastle.
Established: 2008 (UNE joined the JMP).
Location: Armidale Campus, New South Wales, Australia.
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedSc/MD).
Duration: 5 Years (Undergraduate entry).
Language of Instruction: English.
Accreditation: Fully accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). Degrees are recognized globally, including by the NMC (India) and ECFMG (USA).
Rural Focus: UNE specializes in rural medicine, attracting students who are passionate about practicing outside of major metropolitan areas.
JMP Curriculum: Students at UNE follow the same world-class curriculum as those at the University of Newcastle, utilizing a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model.
Facilities: The Armidale campus features the Tablelands Clinical School (TCS), which includes modern simulation laboratories, high-tech ultrasound teaching machines, and specialized anatomy facilities.
Small Class Sizes: UNE typically admits a smaller cohort (approx. 60–70 students), allowing for a high degree of personalized faculty support and a close-knit student community.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
Tablelands Clinical School (TCS): Co-located with the Armidale Rural Referral Hospital, the TCS is the primary clinical hub for UNE students.
Hospital Services: The Armidale Hospital provides services in general surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and OB/GYN, offering broad hands-on exposure.
Clinical Network: Students also rotate through regional hospitals in Inverell, Glen Innes, and Tenterfield, as well as local General Practices.
Hands-on Exposure: Due to the smaller number of students, learners often receive more direct "one-on-one" time with consultants and more frequent opportunities to assist in clinical procedures compared to metropolitan hospitals.
State University Affordability
Tuition fees for the JMP are consistent across both partner universities.
International Tuition Fee: Approximately AUD 87,448 per year (as of 2026 entry).
Domestic (CSP): Commonwealth Supported Places are available for domestic students, with a student contribution of approx. AUD 13,536 per year.
Student Services Fee (SSAF): Approx. AUD 373 per year.
Total Estimated Cost: Including OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) for international students, the total 5-year tuition is roughly AUD 440,000.
The "Cathedral City": Located at 1,000m above sea level, Armidale is Australia's highest city, known for its distinct four seasons, stunning autumn colors, and nearby national parks.
Vibe: A true university city where the local community is highly supportive of medical students. It offers a peaceful, low-stress lifestyle.
Cost of Living: Significantly more affordable than Sydney or Newcastle. Rent for off-campus shared housing can be as low as AUD 150 – AUD 250 per week.
Climate: Cool temperate. Winters can be very cold (frosty mornings), while summers are mild and pleasant.
UNE Residential Colleges: UNE is famous for its residential college system (e.g., Austin, Earle Page, Robb, Mary White).
Cost: AUD 300 – AUD 480 per week.
Catering (Mess): Several colleges offer "fully catered" options, which include three meals a day, seven days a week. This is highly beneficial for medical students during intensive study periods.
Clinical Accommodation: For students at the Tablelands Clinical School, the university provides dedicated 4-bedroom houses (often right across from the hospital) with internet and private bedrooms.
Self-Catering: Students in self-catered apartments or off-campus rentals typically spend AUD 100 – AUD 150 per week on groceries.
Direct Entry: Open to high school leavers and those who have partially completed an undergraduate degree.
Academic Requirements: Minimum ATAR of 94.30 (standard) or 91.40 (rural).
Standardized Testing: UCAT ANZ is mandatory.
Selection Process: Final selection is based on a ranking of the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) and Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA) scores.
Bonded Medical Program: Many domestic places are "bonded," meaning students commit to working in a rural area for 3 years after graduation.
