The University of Nicosia Medical School, founded in 2011, began as a partner of St George’s, University of London, offering the graduate-entry MBBS to its first cohort; students earned a UK degree while studying in Cyprus. Now, UNIC offers its own independent, EU-accredited six-year Doctor of Medicine (MD). The school’s origins with St George’s reveal a continuing high institutional standard for its current programme.
Today, UNIC Medical School is Cyprus’s largest medical school by enrolment, accepting about 200 students annually into the six-year MD and maintaining over 2,000 students across all years. This scale provides a peer community, cohort diversity, and resources unmatched by smaller schools. QS World University Rankings places UNIC in the 701–850 range in the global subject rankings, consistently ranking it among Cyprus’s top universities. The school has rapidly developed its clinical training infrastructure, with affiliated hospitals across Cyprus offering students real patient environments from early in the programme.
UNIC Medical School emphasises a human approach. Its curriculum covers not only the science of medicine but also the "moral and ethical dimension of becoming a doctor." This reflects a firm commitment to producing physicians who are ethically grounded and technically skilled. For students from India, where trust and care are crucial in the doctor-patient relationship, this focus resonates more than a purely scientific curriculum might.
Annual tuition is €24,000 (2026 entry), about ₹21.6 lakh, totalling around €144,000 (₹1.3 crore) for six years. Living costs in Nicosia are about €800–1,000 per month. Scholarships of up to 20% based on financial need can lower costs. UNIC offers a five-year Graduate Entry MD (GEMD) for those with a bachelor’s degree, but the six-year MD is the main pathway for students entering directly from school, including Indian students with 10+2 and NEET qualifications. UNIC’s global recognition is a major differentiator. The school is approved by the NMC (India), listed by the WHO and WDOMS, and recognised for US (ECFMG) and UK (GMC) qualification pathways. Cyprus’s EU membership means its medical degrees are valid across all 27 EU countries—providing graduates with broad international career options, including eligibility for NExT, USMLE, and EU licensure.
