Omsk State Medical University is one of the oldest and most respected medical institutions in Russia, with a history stretching back over a century. It was founded in 1920 as the Medical Faculty of the Siberian Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Zoology, enrolling 186 students in its very first cohort. In 1921 it was reorganised as the West Siberian State Medical Institute, renamed the Omsk State Medical Institute in 1924, and elevated to the Omsk State Medical Academy in 1994. In 2015 it was finally assigned full university status, becoming the Omsk State Medical University (OSMU) it is today. In over 100 years of continuous medical education, OSMU has produced more than 40,000 graduates now practising in Russia and abroad.
Today OSMU is consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in Russia and holds IVth level accreditation, the highest level in the Russian accreditation system. The university has five faculties covering General Medicine, Paediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, and runs 59 departments. Over 73% of faculty members hold advanced academic degrees, and the university employs more than 100 MD-PhD full professors and 300 MD-PhD associate professors. Clinical training takes place across a network of 35 major hospitals in Omsk, making this one of the largest and most diversified clinical training bases of any medical university in Siberia. The university's own simulation centre, equipped with medical robots, gives students realistic procedural experience before they enter hospital wards.
For Indian students considering MBBS in Russia, OSMU offers a highly credible combination of institutional age, clinical depth, and genuine affordability. Annual tuition is approximately USD 4,000 to 4,500 per year, and total 6-year costs come in at around USD 24,000 to 28,000. The MBBS programme at OSMU is fully recognised by NMC India, WHO, and WDOMS, and graduates are eligible to sit the FMGE/NExT exam and practise in India. The programme is taught in English, with Russian introduced in parallel for clinical communication. No donation is required.
Omsk is Russia's eighth largest city and the second largest city in Siberia, with a population of around 1.1 million. Located at the confluence of the Irtysh and Om rivers in south-western Siberia, Omsk was founded in 1716 as a frontier fortress and grew into a major industrial and cultural city. It has a well-developed metro system, an international airport with connections to Moscow and other Russian cities, a famous drama theatre, art galleries, and a zoo. Omsk is a real city with real infrastructure, yet living costs are significantly lower than in Moscow or Saint Petersburg, typically running between USD 120 and 200 per month for a student.
The hostel at OSMU offers separate accommodation for boys and girls, with Indian mess facilities managed by professional cooks on campus. The campus has an auditorium, cafeteria, library described as one of the largest medical libraries in Russia, sports ground, gymnasium, and 22 dedicated sports clubs. The Indian student community in Omsk is well-established and active throughout the year.
