Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, universally known as KazNU, is the oldest and most prestigious university in Kazakhstan, founded in 1934 in Almaty and named after the celebrated medieval philosopher and polymath Al-Farabi. With a sprawling 100-hectare campus housing 13 academic buildings spanning 165,000 square metres and 18,940 square metres of dedicated scientific laboratory space, KazNU is not merely the largest university in the country — it is a genuine research powerhouse that attracts over 20,000 students from more than 100 countries.
The Faculty of Medicine and Healthcare at KazNU offers the General Medicine (MD) programme, which is the equivalent of MBBS in India and is fully taught in English for international students. The six-year programme follows a 5+1 structure — five years of academic and clinical study followed by a mandatory one-year internship — fully compliant with NMC FMGL Regulations 2021. The university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and degrees are ECFMG-eligible.
For Indian students, KazNU's NMC recognition ensures eligibility for the NExT examination upon return to India. Its FMGE 2024 pass rate of 51.08% stands well above the national average for Kazakh universities, a testament to the quality of both instruction and examination preparation support.
