Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), Almaty, Kazakhstan

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, universally known as KazNU, is the oldest and most prestigious university in Kazakhstan, founded in 1934 in Almaty and named after the celebrated medieval philosopher and polymath Al-Farabi. With a sprawling 100-hectare campus housing 13 academic buildings spanning 165,000 square metres and 18,940 square metres of dedicated scientific laboratory space, KazNU is not merely the largest university in the country — it is a genuine research powerhouse that attracts over 20,000 students from more than 100 countries. The Faculty of Medicine and Healthcare at KazNU offers the General Medicine (MD) programme, which is the equivalent of MBBS in India and is fully taught in English for international students. The six-year programme follows a 5+1 structure — five years of academic and clinical study followed by a mandatory one-year internship — fully compliant with NMC FMGL Regulations 2021. The curriculum is aligned with international standards and integrates theoretical grounding with early clinical exposure through KazNU's affiliated teaching hospitals. KazNU's academic standing is exceptional by any regional measure. The university holds 166th place globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the highest-ranked institution in Kazakhstan and among the very top in Emerging Europe and Central Asia. It holds accreditation from bodies including WHO, NMC India, ASIIN, ACQUIN, AQA, and FIBAA, and several of its programmes carry the European Quality Mark 'Euro Label'. The university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and degrees are ECFMG-eligible. For Indian students, KazNU's NMC recognition ensures eligibility for the NExT examination upon return to India. Its FMGE 2024 pass rate of 51.08% stands well above the national average for Kazakh universities, a testament to the quality of both instruction and examination preparation support. The campus library, regarded as a cultural and educational centre of Almaty, provides extensive digital access, and clinical bases at affiliated hospitals offer real patient exposure from the third year onwards. Almaty itself is Kazakhstan's largest city and financial capital — a cosmopolitan, modern metropolis set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Tian Shan mountains. The city has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, excellent public transport, a well-developed Indian food ecosystem, and a thriving international student community. With an annual tuition fee of approximately USD 5,400 and hostel fees of around USD 800, KazNU's total annual budget remains among the most competitive for a globally ranked institution anywhere in the world.
