Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, commonly known as KazNMU, is the oldest and most distinguished dedicated medical university in Kazakhstan, founded in 1931 and named after its first rector, S.D. Asfendiyarov. Located in Almaty, the university has been at the forefront of medical education in Central Asia for nearly a century, and remains the highest-ranked pure medical institution in the country. It educates over 11,000 students across all programmes and employs more than 1,500 highly qualified faculty members. The MD programme (equivalent to MBBS) at KazNMU is conducted entirely in English for international students and follows a 6-year structure comprising five years of integrated academic and practical training followed by a mandatory one-year internship. The curriculum covers all core medical disciplines through a strong pre-clinical foundation and intensive clinical rotations at major Almaty hospitals, including the university's affiliated national referral centres with high patient volumes and complex case diversity. KazNMU is the top-ranked medical university in Kazakhstan in national rankings and holds 5th place nationally across all disciplines on 4ICU. The university is recognised by the NMC of India, WHO, FAIMER, and ECFMG, and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Its accreditation by the Ministry of Healthcare of Kazakhstan is backed by a rigorous quality assurance process that has sustained its position as the benchmark institution for Kazakh medical education. The departments span all major clinical specialties — Therapeutic Medicine, Paediatrics, Stomatology, Pharmacy, and Public Health Management among them. Research activity is strong, with faculty and students engaged in collaborative projects with international institutions. For Indian students, KazNMU provides a culturally supportive environment with Indian mess facilities, an active Indian student association, and structured preparation for licensing examinations including NExT, USMLE, and PLAB. Almaty, where KazNMU is situated, is the economic and cultural capital of Kazakhstan — a city that blends Soviet-era architecture with modern development and spectacular natural scenery. The city's cosmopolitan character, combined with affordable living costs and strong connectivity via Almaty International Airport, makes it a practical and enjoyable base for six years of medical study.

Majority of the websites suggest that it is 6 years course, which includes one year of compulsory internship. This is also aligned with the typical Kazakhstan MBBS course structure. One website claims that it is a 5-year MD equivalent program and doesn't specifically state about the internship period. This might be a counting issue and not structural difference, but better to ask from the university.
