MBBS in G. d Annunzio University of Chieti Pescara School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The University and What Makes It Different

This university started life in an unusual way for an Italian institution. It began in 1965 as a private, free university, the Libera Università degli Studi Abruzzese, named after the poet and soldier Gabriele D'Annunzio, who was actually born in nearby Pescara. Teaching opened formally in March 1966. It wasn't until 1982, roughly seventeen years later, that the Italian state took it over and gave it full public university status.

Medicine arrived a few years into that private-university phase, established by presidential decree in June 1969, about four years after the wider institution's own founding. Worth flagging honestly that the exact decree number cited for this comes from a secondary academic-society source rather than something pulled directly off the university's own site, so treat that specific detail as reliable but not iron-clad.

The current name, Scuola di Medicina e Scienze della Salute, reflects the same nationwide 2010 reform that pushed Italian universities away from the old "Facoltà" terminology. The degree on offer is the standard Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico in Medicina e Chirurgia, six years, Italian-medium throughout. No English-taught or IMAT-based track turned up anywhere in research for this page, and this university doesn't appear on the aggregated lists of Italian schools offering English-medium medicine either, so treat the absence as reasonably solid.

What genuinely sets this university apart structurally is right there in its name. It's a dual-city institution, spanning both Chieti and Pescara, two separate Abruzzo cities that function as one academic entity. That's not a common setup among Italian universities, and it shapes a fair amount of daily life for students here.

The Chieti-Pescara Setup and Its Dual-City Character

The medical school itself is based in Chieti specifically, at Via dei Vestini 31, while the wider university's other faculties and much of student life spill into neighbouring Pescara. If you're picturing a single, self-contained campus town, adjust that picture, this is genuinely a two-city arrangement, and getting comfortable moving between them is part of student life here.

Clinical training runs through the Presidio Ospedaliero Clinicizzato "SS. Annunziata" in Chieti, part of the regional ASL 2 Abruzzo health authority, functioning as the university's own polyclinic. Clinical placements there begin from the third year onward, once the pre-clinical foundation work is done.

Abruzzo as a region doesn't get the same international attention as Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast, but it has its own quieter appeal, mountains, a milder Adriatic coastline, and a noticeably slower pace of life than Italy's bigger cities. Chieti itself is an old hill town with real historical depth, sitting a short distance from Pescara's beachfront.

Cost of living data here is genuinely thin, worth being upfront about. What little third-party information exists suggests Chieti runs somewhat below the Italian national average for everyday costs, but the sample sizes behind those figures are small enough that they shouldn't be treated as solid. No official university-published cost-of-living page turned up either, so budgeting realistically means asking current students or the university directly rather than relying on published averages.

Getting between the two cities is a genuinely practical daily consideration rather than an abstract one. Chieti and Pescara sit close enough together that regular rail and bus links connect them, and depending on where a given year's teaching or clinical placements land, students may find themselves commuting between the two more than they'd expect at a single-site university. Worth factoring into any decision about where to actually live during the course.

Course Structure, Cost, and Practical Details -

On structure: six years, the standard Italian single-cycle model. Since 2020, the degree itself carries qualifying status nationally, and the practical component that replaced the old standalone State Exam is a Tirocinio Pratico-Valutativo built into the final part of the course rather than tacked on afterward, 300 hours across medical, surgical, and general-medicine placements.

Admission for the Italian-taught track follows the same national semestre filtro pattern rolled out across Italy's public universities for the 2025/26 cycle: open enrolment into the first semester, three common national exams in chemistry and biochemistry, physics, and biology, and a national ranking that determines who continues. A specific Chieti-Pescara confirmation page wasn't located directly in research, but there's no reason to expect this public university deviates from the national law that governs every other Italian public medical school's Italian-taught track.

Tuition follows Italy's usual ISEE-based sliding scale in principle, and a fee regulation document for the current academic year does exist on the university's own site, but the specific euro figures inside it weren't accessible during research, so this page genuinely can't give you exact numbers. The honest move here is to treat this as a gap to close directly with admissions rather than guess at a plausible-sounding range.

For anyone weighing this against Italy's more famous medical schools, the dual-city structure and Abruzzo's quieter character are probably the two things worth thinking hardest about, alongside the reality that solid public information on costs here is harder to come by than at some larger, better-documented Italian universities.

Why Chieti-Pescara's Medical School Deserves a Harder Look Than You've Given It

A University That Started Private

Chieti-Pescara was founded in 1965 as a private institution, the Libera Università "Gabriele d'Annunzio," and only transitioned to state status in 1982, roughly four years after its medical faculty had already been established.

A Genuinely Two-City University

The university spans both Chieti and Pescara, roughly 15km apart. The medical campus is centred in Chieti alongside the SS. Annunziata teaching hospital, while other faculties run out of Pescara.

Honest Assessment

There's no English-taught medicine track. Exact medicine-specific tuition beyond the general ISEE-based structure wasn't confirmed from an official source. What you get is one of Abruzzo's main public medical schools, with training built directly around its own university polyclinic.
