North Kazakhstan University named after M. Kozybayev (NKU) is one of the leading state universities in northern Kazakhstan, located in Petropavlovsk — the capital of North Kazakhstan region. The university is a comprehensive multi-faculty institution offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with its Faculty of Medicine providing the MD programme (equivalent to MBBS) for international students in English. The university is named after Manash Kozybayev, a prominent Kazakh historian and public figure. The MD programme at NKU is structured over six years following Kazakhstan's standard 5+1 model, with the first five years dedicated to academic and clinical training across all major medical disciplines, and the final year completed as a mandatory hospital internship. The university's medical faculty is supported by affiliated clinical hospitals in Petropavlovsk, providing students with hands-on exposure in surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and other specialties during their clinical years. NKU holds recognition from the NMC of India and WHO, and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. The university is accredited by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Education and Science, ensuring that its degree is valid for medical licensing in Kazakhstan and internationally through ECFMG-eligible pathways. Indian graduates are eligible to appear for the NExT examination upon return to India. Petropavlovsk is a border city situated close to the Russian frontier, giving it a distinctly Eurasian cultural character. The city is one of the colder student environments in Kazakhstan, with temperatures in winter reaching well below -30°C, so thermal clothing and preparation for a demanding climate are essential. The lower cost of living in Petropavlovsk compared to Almaty or Astana means that the total annual budget at NKU — including tuition, hostel, and living expenses — is among the lowest available for an NMC-recognised degree in Kazakhstan. For students who prioritise cost minimisation and can adapt to a colder northern climate, NKU represents a credible option with genuine international accreditation and the full pathway to Indian medical licensure through NExT.

Petropavlovsk is the northernmost city among Kazakh university towns, situated near the Russian border. Winters are very cold, so students must be well-prepared with appropriate clothing and supplies. The city has a lower cost of living than Almaty or Astana, which translates into a lower overall budget for the six-year programme. An established Indian student community provides peer support.
