North Wales Medical School is based at Bangor University and delivers medical education in partnership with Cardiff University. The North Wales medical program was established to develop doctors who understand North Wales' healthcare needs and to increase medical training capacity in the region.
The current North Wales graduate-entry medicine route is a four-year MBBCh program delivered in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine. The program is based entirely in North Wales and includes clinical placements across the region.
The course is designed for graduate entrants rather than standard Class 12 school-leaver applicants. Students therefore normally need an appropriate prior degree before entering the graduate-entry medical program.
The curriculum is clinically focused and aims to provide substantial clinical contact. Students learn through integrated clinical sciences, practical teaching, clinical placements and patient-centered education.
Bangor University also offers Medical Sciences BMedSci, which can provide a pathway into graduate-entry medicine. High-achieving students may be eligible to apply to the Cardiff University Graduate Entry Medicine program and may remain in Bangor for the North Wales route.
North Wales offers a distinct clinical environment compared with London and other major English cities. Students experience healthcare across a geographically diverse region, including rural and community settings.
There is an important distinction for international applicants. Current 2026 UK medical school data indicate that Bangor is among the UK medical schools currently admitting only home students. Therefore, an overseas applicant should not be presented as being able to directly enter the North Wales MBBCh through an international-fee route unless Bangor/Cardiff confirms eligibility for that specific intake.
