Q1. In which year was Sir Salimullah Medical College founded?
+It was founded way back in 1875 as the Dhaka Medical School by Lt. Colonel Atchison.
The College and What Makes It Different
People call it SSMC for short. It started way back in 1875. Back then, it was Dhaka Medical School. Lieutenant Colonel Atchison first set it up. So, this college is over 149 years old.
The school grew slowly at first. It offered only an LMF certificate at the time. Later, in 1962, real change came. It became Mitford Medical College that year. The next year, it took its current name. This honoured the family's real support for the school.
Full MBBS classes began even later. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman upgraded it in 1972. The first MBBS batch joined in 1973. So, the timeline here runs quite deep. Today, SSMC ranks second among Bangladesh's government medical colleges.
The Old Dhaka Campus and Its Setting
SSMC sits in Old Dhaka. This area holds real historic weight. Its main hospital, Mitford, opened in 1858. That makes Mitford Bangladesh's oldest hospital. So, students train inside a real living history here.
Nearby stands Armanitola playground, built under Nawab Salimullah. This field carries real political history, too. In 1949, a major political meeting happened there. Today, it hosts SSMC's yearly sports events. So, campus life connects directly to national history.
Every February 8th, SSMC marks its founding day. Students join a full campus procession that day. This tradition keeps old history alive each year. Hostel facilities are available for both male and female students.
Course Structure, Cost, and Practical Details
SSMC runs a 5-year MBBS course. One mandatory internship year follows right after. So, the full path takes a total of six years. Local sources describe three or four phases of the professional exam.
Local students enter through a national test. This runs through Bangladesh's DGME and DGHS bodies. Indian students instead use a valid NEET score. Foreign candidates go through the DGHS and the health ministry channels.
Fee data online really varies here. Approximately USD 25,000 to 26,000. That includes tuition, admission costs, and general charges together. However, other listings give far less detail overall. So always check current fees with the college.
Dhaka itself runs busier than smaller cities. Still, it stays cheaper than many Western capitals. Hostel costs were once quoted at around USD 600 to 1200 annually. So always check current hostel rates too.

Why Sir Salimullah Medical College Deserves a Harder Look Than You've Given It
A Field with Real Political History Next Door
Most rival pages never mention this at all. Armanitola playground sits close to campus. Nawab Salimullah himself built this field. In 1949, it hosted a major political meeting. That meeting helped shape Bangladesh's political history. So, this college sits right beside real national history, not just old buildings.
Bangladesh's Oldest Hospital, Not Just an Old College
Most guides call SSMC old and stop there. That phrase actually undersells the real fact. Mitford Hospital opened all the way back in 1858. So, it counts as Bangladesh's very first general hospital. So, students train inside the country's oldest working hospital daily.
Real Named Alumni, Not Just 'Notable Graduates'
Most pages say notable alums and stop there. SSMC actually has named public figures on record. Mustafizur Rahman became Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India. Sadia Faizunnesa became Bangladesh's Ambassador to Brazil. These are real, checkable names, not vague claims.
Honest Assessment
Be clear about a few real gaps here. Online fee figures vary widely and often look dated. Some professional-phase details also differ slightly by source. So, check both points first before committing.
So, who fits here best? Students drawn to real, old institutional history fit well. Students finding and confirming fee details themselves, not just trusting blogs, works well too. However, if exact current fees matter most, ask early and in writing. Still, SSMC's real depth and hospital history earn it serious consideration.
