Avicenna Batumi Medical University (ABMU), formally established on 21 July 2022, is among the most recent medical universities to enter the Georgian higher education space — but it has moved with unusual speed and deliberateness. Named after the legendary Persian physician and polymath Ibn Sina (Avicenna), the university was founded by the Academic Council of Advisors of Medcenter and its partners with an explicit mission: to build a medical institution that embodies Western standards of clinical education from its very first cohort.
In December 2023, ABMU's one-cycle Medical Doctor programme (taught in English) received formal accreditation from Georgia's Higher Educational Institution Accreditation Council under the National Centre for Educational Quality Enhancement (NCEQE). The NCEQE is itself recognised by the WFME, which directly links ABMU graduates to eligibility for USMLE application in the United States. This chain of recognition — ABMU → NCEQE → WFME → ECFMG — is the pathway by which Georgian medical graduates become eligible for international licensing, and ABMU has secured this chain in record time.
The university's programme is built around a three-phase concept: a Basic Phase covering the foundational sciences, a Pre-clinical Phase integrating pharmacology and pathology with clinical reasoning, and a Clinical Phase involving active hospital rotations. Clinical practice begins from Year One at ABMU's five affiliated clinical bases, and the university's simulation training centre is equipped with American-standard technology — providing advanced manikins, task trainers, and diagnostic equipment that develop skills in a risk-free environment before students encounter real patients.
ABMU hosts over 1,500 students including a significant international cohort, and the university actively collaborates with over 50 international institutions to support student exchange and faculty development. The campus is located in Batumi, with hostel facilities equipped with Wi-Fi, laundry, heating, gym access, a sports complex, and a swimming pool — creating a complete student environment.
