The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1967 and has a strong tradition of serving the healthcare needs of Newfoundland and Labrador, Atlantic Canada, and rural and remote communities across the province. The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme follows Canadian accreditation standards and is designed to provide students with a strong scientific foundation, early clinical exposure, extensive supervised clinical training, and meaningful engagement with diverse communities.

Students begin with foundational biomedical sciences including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, genetics, pathology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, neuroscience, epidemiology, public health, ethics, and health systems science. These subjects are taught in an integrated manner with strong emphasis on clinical relevance and patient-centred learning.

Teaching methods include lectures, small-group learning, case-based discussions, problem-based learning, simulation training, anatomy laboratories, clinical skills sessions, digital learning, and early patient exposure. Students develop communication skills, teamwork, professionalism, cultural competence, and clinical reasoning from the beginning of the programme.

Clinical exposure starts early through community placements, outpatient clinics, and hospital-based learning. Students learn history taking, physical examination, diagnostic reasoning, and patient communication before entering full clinical clerkship.

The clinical phase includes rotations in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, family medicine, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, neurology, cardiology, oncology, radiology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, and other specialty areas.

Students train in major affiliated hospitals such as Health Sciences Centre, Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre, St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, and other regional teaching sites. These hospitals provide exposure to tertiary care, trauma, critical care, paediatric medicine, women’s health, oncology, cardiovascular medicine, and advanced surgical services.

A major strength of Memorial Medicine is its commitment to rural, remote, and community healthcare. Students complete clinical experiences in urban, rural, and remote communities across Newfoundland and Labrador, helping them understand diverse healthcare environments and population needs.

Research is an important component of the educational experience. Students have opportunities to participate in projects involving neuroscience, cardiovascular sciences, cancer research, infectious diseases, immunology, diabetes, population health, rural health, Indigenous health, precision medicine, and health services research.

The faculty collaborates extensively with hospitals, research institutes, public health agencies, healthcare organisations, Indigenous communities, and universities across Canada and internationally. These collaborations support scientific innovation, clinical research, community engagement, and advanced medical training.

The curriculum also includes leadership, quality improvement, patient safety, evidence-based medicine, Indigenous health, social accountability, healthcare ethics, advocacy, and interprofessional collaboration.

Educational facilities include simulation centres, anatomy laboratories, research laboratories, clinical skills facilities, digital learning environments, medical libraries, and modern teaching hospitals equipped with advanced healthcare technologies.
