Q1. Is Monno Medical College a government or private institution?
+It is a private, non-profit medical college run by the Monno Welfare Foundation.
Despite being less known compared to the other Dhaka-based medical colleges, Monno Medical College is one of the oldest among the private medical colleges in the nation that have been continuously operating since 2011 under a non-profit foundation and not commercial trust.
The college has been set up by Harunur Rashid Khan Monno, and it operates under Monno Welfare Foundation as a non-profit institution whose vision is mainly about providing service to Manikganj district and the adjoining communities besides producing doctors.
This institution lies in Monno City, Gilondo, in Ghior Upazila, about 7 kilometers away from Manikganj city on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, in a semi-rural setting and not an urban setting within Dhaka.
The college campus is quite spacious: a ten-story academic block covering more than 13 acres of land, including an artificial lake, separate hostels for boys and girls, and residential facilities for interns, doctors, and staff members.
The training of the students for their clinical practice takes place at the associated Monno Medical College Hospital, which is a five-story 500-bed teaching hospital on the same campus where the college is located.
Since Monno Medical College is a private non-profit institution, the fee structure for the international students is decided by the college itself per session; thus, figures quoted through consultants need to be verified with the college/agent before payment.
Here is the approximate cost breakdown for the 6-year program, based on current consultancy-reported figures:
Cost Item | Per Year (USD / INR approx.) | 6-Year Total (INR approx.) |
Tuition Fee | USD 7,500–8,500, approx. INR 6.3–7.1 lakh | INR 38–43 lakh |
Hostel Fee | Included in package for most foreign-student sessions | Included / approx. INR 3–4 lakh |
Food & Meals | INR 70,000–1 lakh | INR 4.2–6 lakh |
Books & Study Items | INR 12,000–18,000 | INR 72,000–1.08 lakh |
Visa & Documentation | One-time + annual renewal, approx. INR 15,000–25,000 | INR 90,000–1.5 lakh |
Donation / Capitation | None | NIL |
Total Estimated | $43,000 to 45,000 USD | INR 42–52 lakh approx. |
Note: Monno Medical College quotes a package fee for foreign students that has historically bundled tuition and hostel together (reported at roughly USD 42,000–45,000 for the full 5-year academic course in past sessions). Food and incidental costs are usually paid separately at actual cost. Figures shift by session, so the current circular should always be confirmed directly with the college before paying anything. No donation or capitation fee is reported.
Why Monno Medical College Deserves a Harder Look
Monno gets omitted from many shortlists mainly because it is located outside the Dhaka city premises and is managed by a foundation, not by a big private firm that engages in aggressive marketing practices. However, that doesn't make it a less favorable choice; it has been functioning non-stop since 2011 and now counts a decade of graduating classes.
As the nonprofit organization under the Monno Welfare Foundation, the college has prioritized accessible and affordable healthcare and education for the Manikganj area in its mission statement, which results in the development of a campus with capacity a 500-bed teaching hospital and a 13-acre campus instead of the compact urban campus.
Being located on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway, the semi-rural location guarantees relative peace compared to the city center locations and accessibility of transportation to the campus.
There is one detail that needs mentioning the fee structure of Monno being quoted differently at various sessions and by various consultants makes having a good agent with a current tie-up with the college a priority.
