Tongji University School of Medicine is one of China's most distinguished medical schools, recognised for excellence in medical education, clinical practice, biomedical research, and international collaboration. Located in Shanghai, one of the world's leading centres for healthcare, education, and scientific innovation, the School of Medicine combines a rich academic heritage with modern medical technologies and globally recognised clinical training. As part of Tongji University, a prestigious member of China's "Double First-Class" initiative, the medical school is committed to producing highly competent physicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders capable of addressing the evolving challenges of global healthcare.
The origins of Tongji University date back to 1907, when it was founded by German physician Dr. Erich Paulun as Tongji German Medical School in Shanghai. The university has maintained a strong tradition of medical education for over a century and has evolved into one of China's premier institutions for medicine, biomedical sciences, and healthcare research. Today, Tongji University School of Medicine continues to uphold its legacy of combining international academic standards with cutting-edge medical innovation.
The university offers a six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme for international students. The curriculum is designed according to internationally accepted medical education standards and integrates biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, evidence-based practice, medical research, ethics, communication skills, and patient-centred healthcare. Graduates are well prepared for international licensing examinations, postgraduate education, and clinical practice worldwide.
Medical education begins with comprehensive instruction in the basic medical sciences. Students study anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, embryology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, behavioural sciences, epidemiology, preventive medicine, medical ethics, and biostatistics. These subjects establish the scientific foundation required for understanding disease mechanisms and clinical medicine.
The curriculum follows an integrated educational approach combining lectures with anatomy dissections, laboratory practicals, simulation-based learning, case-based discussions, problem-based learning (PBL), digital learning platforms, and interdisciplinary seminars. Students develop critical thinking, scientific reasoning, communication skills, professionalism, teamwork, and clinical decision-making abilities throughout the programme.
Clinical exposure begins during the early years through communication workshops, physical examination training, simulation exercises, patient interviews, and supervised hospital observations. This gradual progression prepares students for comprehensive hospital-based clinical education.
Clinical training is conducted through Tongji University's network of affiliated teaching hospitals, including Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji Hospital, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Tenth People's Hospital, and several specialised medical centres. These hospitals provide advanced tertiary healthcare and expose students to a wide range of clinical cases across multiple medical specialties.
Students receive practical training in internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT, radiology, oncology, nephrology, endocrinology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, and community healthcare.
During clinical rotations, students actively participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, operating theatres, emergency departments, multidisciplinary case conferences, diagnostic procedures, and supervised patient management. These experiences strengthen clinical competence while integrating theoretical learning with real-world medical practice.
The affiliated hospitals are equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging systems, robotic surgery technologies, molecular diagnostic laboratories, precision medicine centres, cardiovascular institutes, cancer centres, transplantation units, intensive care departments, and state-of-the-art simulation laboratories. Students benefit from exposure to advanced healthcare technologies used in modern clinical practice.
Research forms an important component of education at Tongji University School of Medicine. Faculty members conduct internationally recognised research in oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular medicine, immunology, molecular biology, genetics, regenerative medicine, stem cell biology, infectious diseases, precision medicine, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence in medicine, public health, epidemiology, pharmaceutical sciences, and translational medicine. Students are encouraged to participate in laboratory research, scientific conferences, faculty-led projects, publications, and innovation programmes.
International collaboration remains one of the university's defining strengths. Tongji University maintains academic partnerships with leading universities, hospitals, and research institutes across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Student exchange programmes, collaborative research, international electives, visiting scholar initiatives, and global conferences provide students with valuable international academic exposure.
The curriculum incorporates emerging healthcare concepts including digital medicine, artificial intelligence, personalised healthcare, evidence-based medicine, healthcare management, preventive medicine, patient safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and medical ethics. These components prepare graduates to practise medicine within rapidly evolving healthcare systems worldwide.
Simulation-based education is integrated throughout the programme using advanced clinical skills centres equipped with high-fidelity patient simulators. Students practise emergency procedures, surgical techniques, communication skills, advanced life support, procedural competencies, and multidisciplinary teamwork before entering real clinical environments.
Student life at Tongji University provides a dynamic multicultural learning environment where students participate in scientific societies, volunteer healthcare programmes, sports clubs, innovation competitions, cultural organisations, research groups, leadership programmes, and international student associations that contribute to professional and personal development.
