VNU University of Medicine and Pharmacy (VNU-UMP) is a medical institution with a unique institutional identity in Vietnamese higher education. Formally established by the Prime Minister of Vietnam in October 2020 though its predecessor School of Medicine and Pharmacy had been operating as part of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-HN) since 2010. VNU-UMP is the medical faculty of VNU-HN, one of Vietnam's two national university systems and the most senior national university in the country, ranking among the top universities in Southeast Asia.
VNU-HN was established in 1993 and is Vietnam's premier comprehensive research university, hosting approximately 640 students per year in the medical programme across its faculty of 260 and staff of 86, located at 2B Pham Van Dong Street, Cau Giay district in Hanoi. The relatively small enrolment with 640 students per year across all programmes β means VNU-UMP operates with an intimate academic environment with a high faculty-to-student ratio, and students receive significantly more individual academic attention than at larger medical universities with enrolments in the thousands.
The founding of VNU-UMP as a medical school within Vietnam's most prestigious national university system reflects a deliberate government strategy to integrate the research infrastructure, international networks, and academic culture of VNU-HN into medical education. VNU-HN has partnerships with leading universities in France, Japan, Australia, the United States, and other countries, and its research outputs in natural sciences, technology, and social sciences are embedded in the broader academic environment that VNU-UMP students inhabit. This research culture is directly relevant for students who see academic medicine, public health research, or biomedical science as part of their future.
The six-year General Medicine programme (MBBS equivalent) follows NMC-compliant curriculum structure of 54 months of academic study plus 12 months of mandatory internship and is taught in both English and Vietnamese, with the international student cohort receiving English-medium instruction. Clinical training in Hanoi provides access to the same national hospital network that serves HMU students. Students should verify current NMC recognition status at nmc.org.in before enrolling, as VNU-UMP is a newer institution (full university status since 2020) and NMC approval status should be confirmed for the specific admission year.
