Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is one of China's leading public medical universities, internationally recognised for excellence in medical education, clinical practice, biomedical research, and healthcare innovation. Located in Wenzhou, a prosperous coastal city in Zhejiang Province, the university has earned an outstanding reputation for producing highly qualified physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals through its comprehensive academic programmes, advanced teaching hospitals, and internationally recognised research institutes. With students from more than 100 countries, Wenzhou Medical University has become one of China's preferred destinations for international MBBS education.
Established in 1912, Wenzhou Medical University is among China's oldest medical institutions. Originally founded as Zhejiang Provincial Medical School, the university later evolved into one of the country's leading centres for medical education and scientific research. Over more than a century, it has made significant contributions to healthcare, clinical medicine, biomedical innovation, and public health while continuously expanding its international collaborations.
The university offers a six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme taught in English for international students. The curriculum follows internationally recognised medical education standards and integrates biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, evidence-based practice, communication skills, medical ethics, scientific research, and patient-centred healthcare. Graduates are well prepared for international licensing examinations, postgraduate education, and professional medical practice across the world.
Medical education begins with comprehensive instruction in the foundational medical sciences. Students study anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, embryology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, behavioural sciences, epidemiology, preventive medicine, medical ethics, and biostatistics. These subjects establish the scientific foundation necessary for advanced clinical learning.
The curriculum combines classroom lectures with anatomy dissections, laboratory practicals, simulation-based learning, problem-based learning (PBL), case-based discussions, digital learning platforms, and interdisciplinary seminars. Throughout the programme, students develop scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, communication skills, teamwork, professionalism, and clinical decision-making abilities.
Clinical exposure begins during the early years through communication workshops, physical examination training, simulation laboratories, patient interviews, and supervised hospital observations. These experiences prepare students for comprehensive clinical education within affiliated teaching hospitals.
Clinical training is delivered through Wenzhou Medical University's extensive network of affiliated hospitals, including the First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital, Eye Hospital, Dental Hospital, and several specialised tertiary healthcare institutions. These hospitals are recognised among China's leading medical centres and provide students with exposure to a broad spectrum of clinical cases.
Students receive practical education across internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT, radiology, oncology, nephrology, endocrinology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, and community healthcare.
During clinical rotations, students actively participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, operating theatres, emergency departments, multidisciplinary clinical meetings, diagnostic procedures, and supervised patient care. These experiences allow students to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical clinical skills while developing professional competence.
The affiliated hospitals feature advanced healthcare technologies including robotic surgery systems, molecular diagnostic laboratories, precision medicine centres, transplantation programmes, comprehensive cancer centres, advanced imaging facilities, intensive care units, cardiovascular institutes, and modern simulation-based medical education centres. Students receive practical exposure to technologies widely adopted in international healthcare systems.
Biomedical research is one of Wenzhou Medical University's greatest strengths. The university is internationally renowned for its achievements in ophthalmology and optometry, while faculty members also conduct significant research in neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular medicine, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, regenerative medicine, stem cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, public health, precision medicine, digital healthcare, and artificial intelligence in medicine. Students are encouraged to participate in laboratory research, faculty-supervised projects, innovation programmes, scientific publications, and international conferences.
International collaboration remains central to the university's academic mission. Wenzhou Medical University maintains partnerships with leading universities, hospitals, and research institutions across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Student exchange programmes, collaborative research, visiting scholar initiatives, international electives, and academic conferences provide valuable global exposure while broadening students' understanding of international healthcare systems.
The curriculum incorporates emerging healthcare concepts including evidence-based medicine, personalised medicine, artificial intelligence, digital healthcare, preventive medicine, healthcare management, patient safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and medical ethics. These elements prepare graduates to practise medicine successfully within modern healthcare environments.
Simulation-based education forms an essential component of practical learning. Students utilise advanced clinical skills laboratories equipped with high-fidelity patient simulators to practise emergency medicine, advanced life support, surgical procedures, communication skills, procedural competencies, and multidisciplinary teamwork before entering real clinical settings.
