Capital Medical University (CMU) is one of China's premier public medical universities, internationally recognised for excellence in medical education, advanced clinical training, biomedical research, and healthcare innovation. Located in Beijing, the capital of China, the university enjoys close collaboration with many of the country's top hospitals, research institutes, and national healthcare organisations. Over the decades, Capital Medical University has earned a strong reputation for producing highly competent physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals who contribute significantly to modern medicine both within China and internationally.
Established in 1960, Capital Medical University has grown into one of the nation's leading medical institutions. The university has consistently expanded its academic programmes, strengthened its research infrastructure, and developed one of the largest networks of affiliated teaching hospitals in China. Today, it serves as an important centre for undergraduate medical education, postgraduate training, specialised clinical services, and biomedical research.
The university offers a comprehensive six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme for international students. The curriculum follows international medical education standards and integrates biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, evidence-based practice, communication skills, research methodology, ethics, and patient-centred healthcare. Graduates are well prepared for medical licensing examinations, postgraduate education, and professional practice across the globe.
Medical education begins with a comprehensive study of the basic medical sciences. Students receive extensive instruction in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, embryology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, behavioural sciences, epidemiology, preventive medicine, medical ethics, and biostatistics. These disciplines establish a strong scientific foundation before students transition into clinical medicine.
The educational model combines classroom lectures with anatomy dissections, laboratory practicals, simulation-based learning, problem-based learning (PBL), case-based discussions, digital educational resources, and interdisciplinary seminars. Students develop scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, communication skills, professionalism, teamwork, and clinical decision-making abilities throughout the programme.
Clinical exposure begins early through communication workshops, physical examination training, simulation laboratories, patient interviews, and supervised hospital observations. These experiences gradually prepare students for advanced hospital-based clinical education.
Clinical training is conducted through Capital Medical University's extensive network of more than twenty affiliated hospitals, including Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Beijing Children's Hospital, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Xuanwu Hospital, and several specialised tertiary healthcare institutions. These hospitals rank among China's finest medical centres and provide outstanding opportunities for practical clinical learning.
Students gain practical experience across internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT, radiology, oncology, nephrology, endocrinology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, and community healthcare.
Throughout clinical rotations, students actively participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, operating theatres, emergency departments, multidisciplinary case discussions, diagnostic procedures, and supervised patient management. These experiences help students integrate theoretical knowledge with practical clinical skills while developing confidence in patient care.
The affiliated hospitals feature advanced medical technologies including robotic surgery systems, molecular diagnostic laboratories, transplantation centres, cardiovascular institutes, cancer treatment facilities, neuroscience centres, intensive care units, advanced imaging systems, and high-fidelity simulation centres. Students receive hands-on experience within one of China's most technologically advanced healthcare environments.
Biomedical research is one of Capital Medical University's greatest strengths. Faculty members conduct internationally recognised research in neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular medicine, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, regenerative medicine, stem cell biology, infectious diseases, precision medicine, digital healthcare, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, epidemiology, public health, and translational medicine. Students are encouraged to participate in laboratory research, faculty-led projects, innovation programmes, scientific publications, and international conferences throughout their education.
International collaboration remains central to the university's academic mission. Capital Medical University maintains partnerships with leading universities, hospitals, and research institutions across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Through exchange programmes, collaborative research, international electives, visiting scholar initiatives, and academic conferences, students gain valuable global exposure and develop a broader understanding of international healthcare systems.
The curriculum incorporates emerging healthcare concepts including evidence-based medicine, digital medicine, personalised healthcare, artificial intelligence, healthcare management, preventive medicine, patient safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and medical ethics. These elements prepare graduates for rapidly evolving healthcare systems worldwide.
Simulation-based education forms an essential component of practical training. Students utilise advanced clinical skills laboratories equipped with high-fidelity patient simulators to practise emergency medicine, surgical procedures, advanced life support, communication skills, procedural techniques, and multidisciplinary teamwork before treating patients in hospital settings.
Student life at Capital Medical University offers a vibrant academic environment where students participate in research organisations, volunteer healthcare programmes, scientific societies, innovation competitions, cultural activities, sports clubs, leadership initiatives, and international student associations that contribute to holistic personal and professional development.
Beijing offers one of the world's finest environments for medical education.
