Q1. Is the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine a public medical school?
+A: Yes. It is part of the public McMaster University.
The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University is one of Canada’s most innovative and internationally influential medical schools, recognised for excellence in medical education, clinical training, health sciences research, evidence-based medicine, and healthcare innovation. Located in Hamilton, Ontario, the school prepares future physicians through a highly integrated curriculum that combines foundational science, clinical medicine, research, professionalism, and patient-centred healthcare.
The medical school was established in 1965 and became internationally famous for pioneering the problem-based learning (PBL) approach and for its major contributions to evidence-based medicine. Over the decades, McMaster has developed into a globally respected centre for medical education, health research, clinical epidemiology, and healthcare innovation.
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme follows Canadian accreditation standards and is known for its three-year curriculum, which is shorter than the traditional four-year programme offered by many North American medical schools. The programme is intensive and designed to maximise clinical exposure, integration of knowledge, and professional development.
Students begin with foundational biomedical sciences including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, genetics, pathology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, neuroscience, epidemiology, public health, ethics, and health systems science. These subjects are integrated with clinical cases from the beginning of the programme.
Teaching methods emphasise small-group problem-based learning, self-directed learning, case-based discussions, simulation training, clinical skills sessions, digital learning, and early patient exposure. Students develop communication skills, teamwork, professionalism, cultural competence, and clinical reasoning throughout the programme.
Clinical exposure starts early through community placements, outpatient clinics, and hospital-based learning. Students learn history taking, physical examination, diagnostic reasoning, and patient communication before entering full clinical clerkship.
The clinical phase includes rotations in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, family medicine, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, neurology, cardiology, oncology, radiology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, and other specialty areas.
Students train in major affiliated hospitals such as Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital, McMaster Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and other regional teaching sites. These hospitals provide exposure to tertiary care, trauma, critical care, paediatric medicine, women’s health, oncology, cardiovascular medicine, and advanced surgical services.
A major strength of McMaster Medicine is its leadership in evidence-based medicine, clinical epidemiology, and health research methodology. Students are encouraged to critically evaluate medical literature and apply research evidence to patient care.
Research opportunities are available in neuroscience, cardiovascular sciences, cancer research, infectious diseases, immunology, diabetes, precision medicine, population health, Indigenous health, health services research, digital health, and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The school collaborates extensively with hospitals, research institutes, public health agencies, biotechnology companies, and universities across Canada and internationally. These collaborations support scientific innovation, clinical research, global health initiatives, and advanced medical training.
The curriculum also includes leadership, quality improvement, patient safety, evidence-based medicine, social accountability, healthcare ethics, advocacy, and interprofessional collaboration.
Educational facilities include simulation centres, anatomy laboratories, research laboratories, clinical skills facilities, digital learning environments, medical libraries, and modern teaching hospitals equipped with advanced healthcare technologies.
Student life is collaborative and supportive. Learners participate in student societies, research groups, wellness programmes, community outreach, global health initiatives, sports, cultural activities, and leadership development. Academic mentoring and career counselling are available throughout the programme.
Graduates of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine pursue residency training across Canada, the United States, and internationally in a wide range of specialties including family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, neurology, and subspecialty fields.
Today, the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the world’s most influential medical schools, combining educational innovation, outstanding clinical training, research excellence, and leadership in evidence-based healthcare.
