North Eastern Federal University, known universally as NEFU, carries the name of Maksim Kirovich Ammosov, an outstanding statesman and one of the founding figures of Yakutia and Kyrgyzstan. The university's roots go back to 1956, when Yakutsk State University was officially established. In April 2010, it was elevated to federal university status, becoming one of only ten federal universities in Russia, a designation that reflects the government's recognition of its strategic importance to the development of northeast Russia and the entire Far East region.
The Institute of Medicine at NEFU is the oldest and most extensive programme within the university. It runs a full 6-year MBBS programme that is taught in English for international students, with Russian introduced gradually for clinical communication in hospital settings. The Institute of Medicine has its own simulation laboratories, well-equipped anatomy halls, and research facilities, and it trains more than 1,000 medical students each year.
NEFU is one of the most internationally connected universities in the Russian Far East. It currently has over 1,200 international students from 53 countries. The full university has 16,000 undergraduate students, 1,600 academic staff (of which 191 hold doctoral degrees and 873 hold candidate of science degrees), 15 institutes, 9 faculties, 3 university branches, 5 major research institutes, and 12 residence halls on campus. For a student coming to NEFU for MBBS in Russia, this means arriving at a large, well-resourced institution with active international student support services and a genuinely diverse academic community.
The MBBS degree from NEFU is recognised by NMC India, WHO, FAIMER, and ECFMG. That last recognition is significant: ECFMG certification means NEFU graduates are eligible not only for the FMGE/NExT exam in India but also for USMLE in the United States and PLAB in the United Kingdom. At a tuition fee of approximately USD 3,250 to 4,000 per year, NEFU is among the most affordable federal universities in Russia offering this breadth of international licensing eligibility.
Yakutsk is the capital of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), the largest federal subject in Russia by area and one of the most ecologically unique regions in the world. Sitting on the Lena River in East Siberia, Yakutsk is the world's coldest city and the only major city built entirely on permafrost. The city has a population of around 304,000, with a rich indigenous Yakut culture that is unlike anything else in Russia. Winters in Yakutsk are extreme, with temperatures regularly reaching minus 40 degrees Celsius or lower, but the university campus is fully equipped to handle Arctic conditions, and students who have studied there describe the experience as one of the most memorable of their lives. Summers are warm and sunny, with long daylight hours and a transformed natural landscape.
The 12 on-campus residence halls house thousands of students, with separate blocks for male and female residents. Rooms are furnished, heated, and come with 24/7 security. The Indian student community at NEFU is established and active, with cultural events and peer support networks running through the academic year. Living costs in Yakutsk are low, with monthly expenses for food, transport, and personal needs averaging around USD 100 to 150.
NEFU entered the Round University Ranking's Golden League of best universities in the world in 2017 and was ranked among the top 600 universities globally by Global World Communicator in the same year. In 2019 it was ranked among the top 30 universities in Russia in the international ARES ranking. For students who want a federally recognised MBBS degree from a research-active, internationally connected university at one of the most affordable price points in Russia, NEFU is a strong and well-established choice.
