MBBS in Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry

Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry is the medical and dental school of Western University, a public research university located in London, Ontario, Canada. The school provides medical education through its Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme and trains future physicians through academic learning, clinical experience, research, and community-based healthcare education.

Western University was established in 1878 and has developed into one of Canada's major research universities. The Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry was established in 1881 as one of the oldest medical schools in Canada. It has continued to expand its medical education and research activities while supporting healthcare services in Ontario and surrounding regions.

The school is publicly funded and operates through two main campuses in London and Windsor, Ontario. Its location provides students with access to healthcare facilities, teaching hospitals, research centres, and diverse patient populations. The London campus works closely with affiliated hospitals, including London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, for clinical education and patient-based learning.

The Doctor of Medicine programme at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry follows a structured curriculum that combines foundational medical sciences, clinical skills training, patient care experience, and research opportunities. The programme is designed to prepare students for residency training and future medical practice in Canada and other healthcare systems.

The early phase of medical education focuses on pre-clinical learning, where students study essential medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and immunology. Students learn how the human body functions, how diseases develop, and how medical conditions are investigated and treated.

The curriculum uses different teaching methods, including lectures, small-group learning, case-based discussions, practical sessions, and independent study. Students also develop communication skills, ethical understanding, and professional behaviour required for patient care. The programme introduces clinical concepts early, allowing students to connect scientific knowledge with real healthcare situations.

Clinical education forms a significant part of the MD programme. Students complete rotations across different medical specialties, including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, emergency medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology. These experiences allow learners to work with healthcare professionals and understand diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management.

The school provides clinical training through affiliated hospitals, community clinics, and healthcare centres. Students gain exposure to different healthcare environments and patient groups. This approach helps learners develop practical skills and understand the responsibilities of physicians in various medical settings.

Simulation-based learning is an important part of medical training at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. Students use simulation facilities to practise clinical procedures, emergency response, communication skills, and teamwork. These sessions allow learners to improve their confidence and decision-making before managing complex patient situations.

Research is a major part of the school's academic activities. Students have opportunities to participate in research projects through various departments and research centres. Research areas include cancer research, neuroscience, cardiovascular health, medical education, population health, and healthcare innovation.

The school collaborates with hospitals, healthcare organisations, and academic institutions to support medical education and research. These partnerships provide students with opportunities to learn from experienced physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals.

Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry also supports students through academic advising, wellness services, career guidance, and professional development programmes. The school encourages students to participate in community health activities, leadership opportunities, and research initiatives.

Graduates receive a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and can continue their medical careers through residency training in Canada or other countries. The programme provides students with scientific knowledge, clinical skills, research experience, and professional values required for modern healthcare practice.

Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University, continues to contribute to Canadian medical education through its focus on teaching, patient care, and research. Its established academic environment and clinical partnerships provide students with opportunities to develop into skilled and responsible physicians.
