The Faculty of Medicine at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) is one of Spain’s top-performing medical schools, consistently ranking among the best for results in the national MIR exam (medical residency). Located in the Sant Joan d’Alacant Campus, it forms part of a specialized health sciences cluster integrated with the university hospital and world-class research institutes.
The Faculty of Medicine is not located in the city of Elche, but on the dedicated Sant Joan d’Alacant Campus, situated right next to the University Hospital.
Specialized Facilities:
Institute of Neurosciences (IN): A joint research center between UMH and CSIC, widely recognized as a premier center for brain research in Europe.
Drug Dependence Research Institute (INID): Focused on multidisciplinary studies of substance abuse and behavioral addictions.
Dissection Halls & Labs: Modern facilities for anatomy and clinical skills, including specialized labs for occupational therapy and podiatry.
Libraries: The campus features a specialized Health Sciences library with extensive digital access to biomedical journals and clinical databases.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
Training at UMH is highly clinical, utilizing a network of major tertiary hospitals in the Alicante province.
University Hospital of Sant Joan d’Alacant: The primary teaching base, located directly on campus.
General University Hospital of Alicante: One of the largest hospitals in Spain, providing a massive variety of clinical cases.
General University Hospital of Elche: A key referral center for the southern part of the province.
University Hospital of Torrevieja: Provides exposure to a highly international patient population.
State University Affordability
As a public university in the Valencian Community, tuition is based on credits.
Note: Living in Sant Joan d'Alacant or the city of Alicante is generally more affordable than Madrid or Barcelona, and the campus is well-connected by tram and bus.
Accommodation:
University Managed Housing: UMH provides guidance for students looking for shared flats in Sant Joan or Alicante.
Private Residences: Many students live in private student halls in Alicante city (15-20 mins away by tram) where rooms range from €350 to €550/month.
Dining (Mess):
The Sant Joan campus has a university cafeteria with subsidized prices for students. A full "Menú del Día" typically costs between €6.00 and €8.00.
Entrance Grade: Admission is strictly based on the "Nota de Corte." For Medicine at UMH, this is usually very high, typically above 13.2 out of 14.0.
UNEDasiss: International students with non-Spanish diplomas must validate their records through the UNEDasiss portal.
PCE Exams: To be competitive, it is necessary to take Specific Competency Tests (PCE) in Biology and Chemistry.
Deadlines: Applications for the 2025/26 academic year usually open in June 2025.
