Greece is an EU member state with a long and distinguished medical education tradition. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece's largest university, and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) both hold NMC listing and offer medicine programmes that qualify for EU medical licence eligibility and FMGE/NExT in India. The critical consideration for Indian students is language: Greece's public medical universities teach their undergraduate medicine programme primarily in Greek. Clinical years, patient communication, and most academic instruction are conducted in Greek. Students who wish to pursue medicine in Greece must commit to achieving Greek language proficiency, typically at the B2 level for admission and progressing to clinical fluency during the programme.
There is a growing range of private English-medium medical programmes in Greece, most notably the American College of Greece-affiliated tracks and newer private medical schools. The public universities remain the most established and respected options, but require a commitment to the Greek language.
At a total 6-year cost of approximately ₹40–60 Lakhs, which is very affordable by EU standards, Greece offers excellent value for students who invest in Greek language preparation.
