Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University (BKNMU) is a public State University located in Junagadh, Gujarat. It was established by the Government of Gujarat in 2015 to serve the higher education needs of the Junagadh, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, and Devbhumi Dwarka districts, which were previously under Saurashtra University.
Named after the revered poet-saint Narsinh Mehta, the university functions as a teaching-cum-affiliating institution. It runs several postgraduate departments on its main campus (Khadia, Junagadh) and provides academic governance to a vast network of over 160 affiliated colleges (government, grant-in-aid, and self-financed) within its jurisdiction, serving over 100,000 students.

BKNMU operates from its main campus in Junagadh.
Location: Situated at Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University Road, Khadia, Junagadh, Gujarat.
Campus Size & Vibe: The campus is spread over 235 acres, serving as the central administrative hub for managing its vast network of affiliated colleges. It also houses the university's own postgraduate teaching departments, providing a focused academic environment for PG students and research scholars.
Infrastructure & Facilities:
Academic Departments: Dedicated buildings for its postgraduate departments (e.g., Chemistry, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Languages, Commerce & Management).
Central Library: A well-stocked library with a growing collection of books, journals, and e-resources.
Laboratories: Equipped labs for practical work in science disciplines (Chemistry, Life Sciences, Forensic Science) offered at the PG level.
Learning Spaces: Modern classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms.
Residential Life: Hostel facilities are available on campus for both boys and girls.
Amenities: Administrative offices, Health Centre, canteens, sports complex, and Wi-Fi.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
It's important to understand BKNMU's role in health education; it is purely affiliating.
No Constituent Medical College: BKNMU does not have its own constituent Medical College offering the MBBS degree, nor does it operate its own large general teaching hospital for this purpose.
Affiliation Role: The university acts as the affiliating university for health science colleges within its jurisdiction. This includes:
Medical: The GMERS Medical College, Junagadh, a government-society-run college, is affiliated with BKNMU for its MBBS degree.
Health-Related Programs (On Campus): The university's own campus offers strong programs in Life Sciences (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology), Chemistry & Forensic Science, but not direct clinical (MBBS) training.
State University Affordability
Being a state university, BKNMU's fees for its regular, government-aided programs on campus are extremely affordable. Self-financed courses (like MBA) and fees at affiliated private/SFI colleges are significantly higher.
BKNMU provides residential facilities, primarily for students enrolled in its on-campus (mostly PG) programs.
Availability: Yes, the university provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls on its main campus.
Facilities: Hostels offer furnished accommodation (typically 2 or 3-sharing rooms), common rooms, dining halls (messes), 24/7 security, warden supervision, and essential amenities like RO water, hot water, etc.
Mess System: Each hostel typically operates its own mess, providing regular meals.
Cost: As a state university, the hostel and mess fees are generally very economical. Expect annual hostel fees (rent, electricity) to be very low (e.g., ~₹12,000). Mess charges are separate and paid monthly based on actual expenses (e.g., ~₹3,000 - ₹3,500 per month). Total annual cost (Hostel + Mess) is likely in the ₹45,000 - ₹60,000 range.
Getting Admitted:
UG (BA/BSc/BCom etc. in Affiliated Colleges): Admission to most general UG courses in colleges affiliated with BKNMU is managed through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal, a centralized, merit-based process based on Class 12 marks.
PG (MA/MSc/MCom on Campus): Admission to most on-campus postgraduate programs is also typically managed via the GCAS portal, based on merit in the qualifying Bachelor's degree.
MBBS / BDS / AYUSH (Affiliated): Admission is strictly based on rank in NEET-UG. Seat allotment for all quotas (Govt, Mgmt, NRI) is handled by the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Educational Courses (ACPUGMEC), Gujarat.
B.Tech (Affiliated): Admission to affiliated engineering colleges is based on JEE (Main) scores and/or GUJCET (Gujarat Common Entrance Test), followed by ACPC (Admission Committee for Professional Courses) counselling.
MBA: Admission is likely based on CMAT scores, followed by centralized counselling (ACPC).
B.Ed: Admission is through the state's centralized B.Ed admission process.
Ph.D.: Admission involves a University Entrance Test (PET/NET/GSET) followed by interviews.
Always check the official BKNMU admission notifications and the relevant Gujarat state admission portals (GCAS, ACPC, ACPUGMEC).
Career Support (Placements):
Focus: BKNMU has an active Training and Placement Cell. For many graduates, career paths involve state government jobs (GPSC, Banking), teaching positions (B.Ed/NET/SET), local entrepreneurship (the Saurashtra region has many SMEs), or further studies.
Campus Placements: Direct campus placements are more relevant for the on-campus MBA, MSW, M.Sc programs, and professional courses in affiliated colleges (Engineering, Pharmacy). The university organizes job fairs attracting local and state-level companies.
Recruiters: Recruiters often include pharmaceutical companies (Dishman, Synzeal), healthcare providers, IT firms (TCS, Wipro, Infosys), banks (HDFC, Axis), and local industries.
Outcomes: Placement success varies. The median package for PG (2-year) programs (like MBA/MSc) was reported around ₹2.72 LPA in NIRF 2024. The university's key role is providing accessible higher education to a large population in its five-district jurisdiction.
Provisions for NRI/Foreign Nationals exist, primarily through affiliated colleges and specific university policies.
