State University Affordability
As a state university, BNMU's on-campus, government-aided courses are extremely affordable. Fees in its affiliated colleges, especially private professional colleges, are significantly higher.
Availability: Separate hostels for boys and girls are available for on-campus PG students.
Cost: The hostel fees are highly economical. Based on student reviews, the annual hostel rent is approximately ₹12,000. Mess charges are separate and are typically paid monthly on an actual-expense basis, costing around ₹3,000 - ₹3,500 per month.
Admission to BNMU and its colleges is managed through a mix of national tests and merit-based lists. The university does not use the CUET.
On-Campus PG (MA, M.Sc, M.Com): Admission is merit-based, based on the marks obtained in the qualifying Bachelor's degree.
On-Campus MBA: Admission is based on scores from national tests like CAT, MAT, or XAT.
UG (BA, B.Sc, B.Com): Admission to all affiliated colleges is merit-based, based on Class 12 marks. The university releases a centralized merit list (UMIS portal).
B.Tech: Admission is based on the JEE (Main) rank, followed by counselling.
MBBS: Admission is strictly based on the NEET-UG rank, followed by state-level counselling (BCECE).
Ph.D.: Admission is through the university's Ph.D. Admission Test (PAT), with NET/JRF-qualified candidates often exempted.
The university has a central Training and Placement Cell, but placement activities are highly decentralized.
On-Campus (PG): Placements for on-campus MA/M.Sc departments are very limited, as most students pursue academic careers (Ph.D., NET/JRF) or prepare for government jobs. The NIRF 2024 report noted 6 students placed from on-campus PG programs with a median salary of ₹5.80 LPA.
Affiliated Colleges (B.Tech/MBA): Placements vary drastically by college. Top affiliated engineering colleges report placement rates as high as 90%, with recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, and HCL. The average package at these colleges is typically in the ₹3.5 LPA - ₹4.5 LPA range, with the highest packages reaching up to ₹10 LPA.
MBBS: Graduates complete their mandatory 1-year internship at the affiliated hospital (e.g., Katihar Medical College) and then pursue postgraduate studies (via NEET-PG) or join hospitals as medical officers.
On-Campus Programs: The university's official website has a section for International Students, but it is not yet active ("Data will be uploaded soon"). There is no formal admission process or fee structure currently in place for NRI/Foreign students for on-campus courses like MA, M.Sc, or MBA.
Affiliated Colleges (MBBS): NRI admissions are available at affiliated private medical colleges like Katihar Medical College. These admissions are not handled by BNMU but are managed centrally by the state's BCECEB counselling based on NEET-UG rank. The fees for the NRI quota are significantly higher (e.g., ~₹24 Lakhs/year).
