General Information

The Defence Services Medical Academy (DSMA) is the best military medical school for the Myanmar Armed Forces. It was founded in 1992 as the Defence Services Institute of Medicine. It was built in Mingaladon, Yangon, to help with the military's serious lack of doctors. DSMA is one of the most selective colleges in Myanmar. It trains very disciplined military doctors who work in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Graduates are given the rank of lieutenant and often work in areas that are far away or have been affected by conflict.


General Information

  • Degree Given: M.B., B.S. 7-year program (including an internship) that is the same as an MD/MBBS.
  • English is the language of instruction, but clinical interactions will be in Burmese.
  • Accreditation: The Myanmar Medical Council (MMC) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) both recognize it.

  • Selection: Very strict; only lets in about 300 to 400 students each year.
  • Requirements: Open to both boys and girls under 18; must have high scores on the DSMA entrance exam (Biology and English), pass physical fitness tests, psychometric tests, and personal interviews.
  • Military Service: Students are cadets, and when they graduate, they have to join the Myanmar Army Medical Corps.

Campus Facilities

The DSMA campus in Mingaladon is meant to be both a high-level medical school and a military training school.

  • The Maersk-Level Research Labs have advanced labs for microbiology, pathology, and biochemistry. One of these labs is a BSL-3 lab for working with infectious diseases.
  • Clinical Skills Laboratory: A special room with medical simulators and manikins where students can practice procedures before going to the hospital.
  • Lecture Theaters: There are 12 specialized lecture halls with 50 to 200 seats each, all with modern multimedia and IT equipment.
  • The DS Medical Research Center (DSMRC) is the first research center in Myanmar to have genome sequencing technology. It focuses on infectious diseases and toxic exposure.
  • Digital E-Library: A full-service learning center that gives students and teachers access to international medical databases and journals over high-speed internet.
  • Language Labs: There are four specialized language labs to help students become very good at medical English.
  • Small Group Teaching Rooms: There are 25 rooms set aside for Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Task-Based Learning (TBL) sessions.
  • Common Research Lab: A place where students and senior military medical faculty can work together on projects from different fields.
  • IT and Computer Lab: A modern computer lab where students learn about health informatics and data analysis.
  • Military Science Facilities: These include parade grounds and leadership training areas where cadets study military science for one month each year.

  • DS General Hospital (Mingaladon): This is the main teaching hospital. It has 1,000 beds and offers advanced medical and surgical care.
  • DS Orthopaedic Hospital is a 500-bed hospital in Mingaladon that specializes in trauma and musculoskeletal training.
  • No. 2 Military Hospital: A general hospital with 500 beds that was the first place where the academy's diagnosis building was built.
  • Specialty Hospitals: The DS Liver Hospital has 500 beds, and the DS Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Child Health Hospital has 300 beds.
  • Field Training: In their senior years, students spend a month working at military hospitals in remote areas as part of a field practical tour of duty.
