Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University (HNBUMU), located in Dehradun, is the state's public Medical University. Established in 2014 by the Government of Uttarakhand through a legislative act, its creation was specifically aimed at standardizing and improving medical, dental, nursing, and paramedical education across the state.
Named after the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, HNBUMU's primary function is affiliation and academic regulation. It serves as the sole affiliating university for all government and private medical, dental, nursing, and paramedical colleges within Uttarakhand. It sets the curriculum, conducts the university examinations for these professional courses, and awards the final degrees.

HNBUMU operates from its administrative campus in Dehradun.
Location: Situated in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand.
Campus Role: Similar to ABVMU in UP, the HNBUMU campus primarily functions as the administrative and examination headquarters. It houses the offices of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, and departments managing affiliations, academic affairs, and entrance tests.
Infrastructure: Expect modern administrative buildings equipped for university governance, examination processing, and conducting meetings. It is not a traditional teaching campus where large numbers of undergraduate students attend daily classes.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
HNBUMU itself does not run its own central, large-scale teaching hospital on its administrative campus. Its strength lies in the network of hospitals associated with the colleges it affiliates.
Affiliated Hospitals: Every teaching hospital linked to a government or private medical, dental, nursing, or paramedical college in Uttarakhand falls under HNBUMU's academic purview. This includes major hospitals like those associated with Government Medical College Haldwani, Doon Medical College Dehradun, Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Almora, and private institutions like Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences (SGRRIM&HS) Dehradun, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS, Jolly Grant), etc.
Training Ground: Students pursuing MBBS, BDS, MD/MS, Nursing, or Paramedical courses under HNBUMU receive their entire clinical training, internships, and practical exposure at the specific hospital attached to their allotted college. HNBUMU ensures the quality and standards of this training through its curriculum and examinations.
State University Affordability
Fees for courses under HNBUMU depend heavily on the type of college (Government or Private Management/State Quota) and are regulated by the Uttarakhand state government.
As HNBUMU is primarily an administrative and examining body, it does not provide central hostel facilities for students enrolled in its various affiliated colleges across Uttarakhand.
College Hostels: Residential facilities (hostels) and dining arrangements (mess) are entirely managed by the individual affiliated colleges where the students are admitted (e.g., GMC Haldwani, Doon Medical College, SGRR, HIMS, etc.).
Facilities & Fees: The availability, quality of rooms (shared/single, AC/non-AC), mess food, hostel rules, and the associated hostel and mess fees are all determined by and paid directly to the respective college administration. Costs vary significantly between government and private institutions.
Getting Admitted:
MBBS/BDS & MD/MS/MDS: Admission is strictly via NEET-UG or NEET-PG/MDS ranks. The crucial step is participation in the Uttarakhand State NEET Counselling, conducted by HNBUMU itself, for allotment to state quota seats in government colleges and all seats (State, Management, NRI) in private colleges. MCC handles the All India Quota for government colleges.
Nursing & Paramedical: Admission is based on ranks obtained in the state-level Nursing/Paramedical entrance examinations conducted by HNBUMU. HNBUMU then conducts centralized counselling for seat allotment based on merit in these exams.
Career Support (Placements):
University Role: HNBUMU does not run a central placement cell for all affiliated colleges.
College Responsibility: Placement activities and support are handled by the individual affiliated colleges.
Outcomes: MBBS/BDS/MD/MS graduates typically complete internships/residencies and pursue PG, government service (often required due to service bonds in govt colleges), or private practice. Nursing and Paramedical graduates' placements depend on the reputation and efforts of their specific college, targeting hospitals and healthcare setups within Uttarakhand and beyond.
Uttarakhand's private medical and dental colleges, affiliated with HNBUMU, usually have provisions for NRI admissions.
