Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University (MKBU), formerly Bhavnagar University, is a public State University located in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. It was established in 1978 by the Government of Gujarat to cater to the higher education needs of the region.
The university functions as a teaching-cum-affiliating institution. It has 22 postgraduate departments on its main campus, offering a variety of courses. Its primary role, however, is as an affiliating university for a large number of colleges (over 80 affiliated and 18 constituent colleges) spread across the Bhavnagar district and surrounding areas.

MKBU operates from its main campus in Bhavnagar.
Location: Situated in the city of Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
Campus Size & Vibe: The campus is spread over a large area (approximately 269 acres), providing a spacious and green environment for academic pursuits. It serves as the central administrative hub for managing its vast network of colleges and houses its on-campus postgraduate departments.
Infrastructure & Facilities:
Academic Departments: Dedicated buildings for its postgraduate departments (e.g., Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Commerce, Management, Education, Social Sciences, Arts).
Central Library: A well-stocked library with a large collection of books, journals, and digital resources to support PG students and research scholars.
Laboratories: Equipped labs for practical work in various science disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Computer Science) offered at the PG level.
Learning Spaces: Classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms for PG teaching.
Residential Life: Hostel facilities are available on campus for both boys (4 hostels) and girls (2 hostels).
Amenities: Administrative offices, Health Centre, canteens, sports facilities (grounds, gym), and banking/ATM facilities.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
It is important to understand MKBU's role in health education; it is purely affiliating.
No Constituent Medical College: MKBU does not have its own constituent Medical College offering the MBBS degree, nor does it operate its own large general teaching hospital for this purpose.
Affiliation Role: The university acts as the affiliating university for health science colleges within its jurisdiction. This includes:
Medical: The Government Medical College, Bhavnagar (attached to Sir Takhtasinhji General Hospital) is affiliated with MKBU for its MBBS and MD/MS degrees.
Dental: The Manubhai Patel Dental College, Vadodara (affiliated with MKBU, though geographically distant, which is unusual) for its BDS/MDS degrees.
Nursing/Pharmacy: Several affiliated colleges, like Shree Sahajanand Institute of Nursing and Shantilal Shah Pharmacy College.
Health-Related Programs (On Campus): The university's own campus offers strong programs in Life Sciences (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology) but not direct clinical (MBBS/BDS) training.
State University Affordability
Being a state university, MKBU's fees for its regular, government-aided programs on campus are extremely affordable. Self-financed courses (like MBA, BBA/BCA in affiliated colleges) and fees at affiliated private/SFI colleges are significantly higher.
MKBU provides residential facilities for students enrolled in its on-campus (mostly PG) programs.
Availability: Yes, the university has separate hostel blocks (4 for boys, 2 for girls) on its main campus. Allotment is usually based on merit and category.
Facilities: Hostels offer basic furnished accommodation (typically 3-4 sharing rooms), common rooms, dining halls (messes), 24/7 security, warden supervision, and essential amenities like RO water.
Mess System: Each hostel typically operates its own mess, providing regular (often vegetarian) meals.
Cost: As a state university, the hostel and mess fees are extremely economical. Expect annual hostel fees (rent, electricity) to be very low (e.g., ~₹1,200 - ₹3,000). Mess charges are separate and paid monthly based on actual expenses (e.g., ~₹3,000 - ₹5,000 per month).
Getting Admitted:
UG (BA/BSc/BCom etc. in Affiliated Colleges): Admission to most general UG courses in colleges affiliated with MKBU is managed through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal, a centralized, merit-based process based on Class 12 marks.
PG (MA/MSc/MCom on Campus): Admission to most on-campus postgraduate programs is also typically managed via the GCAS portal, based on merit in the qualifying Bachelor's degree.
MBBS / BDS / AYUSH (Affiliated): Admission is strictly based on rank in NEET-UG. Seat allotment for all quotas (Govt, Mgmt, NRI) is handled by the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Educational Courses (ACPUGMEC), Gujarat.
B.Tech (Affiliated): Admission to affiliated engineering colleges is based on JEE (Main) scores and/or GUJCET (Gujarat Common Entrance Test), followed by ACPC (Admission Committee for Professional Courses) counselling.
MBA (On Campus): Admission is based on CMAT scores, followed by centralized counselling (ACPC).
B.Ed: Admission is through the state's centralized B.Ed admission process.
Ph.D.: Admission involves a University Entrance Test (exempt for NET/JRF/SET qualified candidates) followed by interviews.
Always check the official MKBU admission notifications and the relevant Gujarat state admission portals (GCAS, ACPC, ACPUGMEC).
Career Support (Placements):
Focus: MKBU has a University Placement Cell. For the large number of graduates from its affiliated arts, science, and commerce colleges, career paths often involve state government jobs (GPSC, Banking), teaching positions (B.Ed/NET/SET), local entrepreneurship (Bhavnagar is an industrial center), or further studies.
Campus Placements: Direct campus placements are more relevant for the on-campus MBA, MSW, M.Sc programs, and professional courses in affiliated colleges (Engineering, Pharmacy).
Recruiters: Recruiters often include local/regional companies, banks (HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak), IT service firms (TCS, Wipro, Infosys), and major industrial groups (Reliance, Tata, L&T).
Outcomes: Placement success varies. The median package for PG (2-year) programs (like MBA/MSc) was reported around ₹2.85 LPA in NIRF 2025 data. The university plays a critical role in providing skilled manpower for the Saurashtra region.
Provisions for NRI/Foreign Nationals exist, primarily through affiliated colleges and specific university policies.
