Maseno University School of Medicine

Pre-clinical training (Years 1–3) takes place at the Siriba Campus, which features dedicated medical infrastructure.

• State-of-the-Art Laboratories: Specialized labs for Anatomy (dissection), Physiology, and Biochemistry located in the Siriba part of the main campus.

Clinical clerkships (Years 4–6) are primarily undertaken in nearby Kisumu City:

• Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH): Known locally as "Russia," this is the main teaching hospital for Maseno SOM, offering high-volume exposure to diverse medical and surgical cases.
• Kisumu County Referral Hospital: A secondary site for clinical rotations and community health training.
• Community Medical Camps: The school regularly organizes outreach in Marera and surrounding villages, allowing students to practice primary care under supervision.

Fees are structured per year and differ based on whether a student is government-sponsored or self-sponsored.

Scholarship

• Higher Education Financing (HEF): Kenyan students are eligible for the new government funding model, which provides loans and grants based on household income.
• HELB Loans: Low-interest loans provided specifically for medical and health science students.
• University Bursaries: Managed by the Dean of Students for extremely needy cases.
• St. John’s Ambulance Training: A mandatory First Aid course is required for admission, often sponsored or subsidized for eligible students.

• Accommodation: Many medical students stay in the Siriba Hostels due to their proximity to the labs. Private "off-campus" housing is also available in Maseno town.
• Dining: Several university mess facilities offer affordable local staples like "Ugali-Omena" and "Sukuma Wiki."
• Vibe: Close-knit and academic. The Maseno University Medical Students Association (MUMSA) is highly active in organizing academic symposiums and "White Coat" ceremonies.
• Unique Tradition: Being on the Equator, students often experience the "No Shadow" phenomenon at noon during equinoxes.

• Admission Requirements:
• MBChB: Minimum KCSE Mean Grade of B+ (plus) with at least B (plain) in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Physics, and English/Swahili.
• Mandatory Requirements: On admission, students must bring a stethoscope, two white lab coats, a box of disposable gloves, and a red-base name tag.
