The College of Medicine (CMED) at Qatar University (QU), established in 2014, is the first national medical college in the State of Qatar. Unlike the American-style graduate program at Weill Cornell, QU offers a direct-entry 6-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program specifically designed to build a sustainable local physician workforce while remaining open to top international talent.
Program: A 6-year MD program (no foundation year; students enter Year 1 immediately).
Curriculum: Utilizes a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Patient-Centered approach, emphasizing early clinical exposure from the very first week.
Language: Instruction is entirely in English.
Accreditation: Fully accredited by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
Location: Located on the main Qatar University campus in the northern part of Doha.
Facilities: Includes high-tech Clinical Skills Labs with standardized patients (actors), anatomy and histology laboratories, and small-group seminar rooms designed for PBL sessions.
Research: Students are heavily involved in research through the QU Health cluster, focusing on genomics, cancer, and metabolic diseases.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
Clinical education is integrated throughout the 6 years, with rotations taking place at the country's leading healthcare institutions:
Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC): The main clinical training site, providing exposure to large-scale secondary and tertiary care.
Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC): Used primarily in early years (Phase 1) for community-based learning and primary care exposure.
Sidra Medicine: Specialized training for pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.
State University Affordability
Annual Tuition: Approximately QAR 120,000 to QAR 150,000 (~$33,000 – $41,000 USD) for international students.
Credit Hour Cost: Fees are generally calculated per credit hour, with clinical years having a slightly different structure than pre-clinical years.
Scholarships: QU offers Competitive Scholarships for international students that can cover 100% of tuition, housing, and provide a monthly stipend of QAR 6,000.
Lifestyle: A safe, ultra-modern city with a high standard of living. Medical students benefit from a highly developed healthcare infrastructure.
Weather: Extreme heat in summer (campus is fully indoor/connected), but pleasant from October to April.
