Tanta University Faculty of Medicine is one of Egypt's most established and respected medical faculties, with origins dating back to 1962, when medical education began in Tanta as part of Alexandria University, before Tanta University was granted full independent status in 1973. Situated in the heart of the Nile Delta in Gharbia Governorate, Tanta occupies a geographically strategic position roughly midway between Cairo and Alexandria, making it one of the most accessible regional medical training centres in Lower Egypt. Over more than six decades of continuous operation, Tanta has built a substantial teaching hospital infrastructure and a faculty research base that places it consistently among Egypt's top regional medical schools, alongside Mansoura, Zagazig, and Ain Shams.
The Faculty's clinical training network centres on Tanta University Hospitals, a large multi-speciality teaching hospital complex that serves not only the immediate Tanta population but draws referral cases from across the Gharbia, Kafr El Sheikh, and Monufia governorates — a combined catchment area of several million people in one of Egypt's most densely populated agricultural regions. This case volume and referral complexity give Tanta medical students clinical exposure that is genuinely comparable to that of the larger Cairo and Alexandria faculties, while training in a more compact, manageable city environment.
Tanta's MBBCh programme follows the standard Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education curriculum structure: five academic years of integrated basic science and clinical training followed by a mandatory one-year rotating internship. The Faculty has a particular research strength in nephrology and urology. The Mansoura Urology and Nephrology Centre's regional prominence has historically drawn comparisons with strong urology departments throughout the Delta, including Tanta's own programme, as well as established departments in cardiology, gastroenterology, and tropical medicine, reflecting the Delta region's distinct disease ecology. For Indian and other international students, Tanta represents a well-established, moderately priced option with strong clinical training depth and a central, accessible Delta location.
