The School of Medicine at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is Canada's newest medical school, located in Brampton, Ontario. Slated to open for its inaugural cohort in September 2025, it is designed with a mandate for social accountability, primary care, and community-engaged learning.
Established: 2024 (Opening 2025).
Location: Brampton, Ontario (Primary site at the former Bramalea Civic Centre).
Degree Conferred: Doctor of Medicine (MD).
Duration: 4 Years.
Language of Instruction: English.
Accreditation: Currently in the process of accreditation by the CACMS.
Quota: 94 Undergraduate (MD) seats and 105 Postgraduate (Residency) seats.
Eligibility: International students are not currently considered for the MD program. 95% of seats are reserved for Ontario residents.
Brampton Focus: TMU chose Brampton because it is one of Canada's most diverse and fastest-growing communities, serving as a "microcosm" of future Canadian demographics.
Innovative Curriculum: The program follows a "Master Adaptive Learner" model, which uses inquiry-based and small-group case-based learning.
Curriculum Phases:
Phase 1 (Foundations): Acquisition of basic, clinical, and social sciences with a focus on anti-racism and equity.
Phase 2 (Clinical & Community Immersion): A Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) where students spend 3 days a week in Family Medicine clinics while rotating through acute care hospital sites.
Phase 3 (Professionalization): Career-focused electives and preparation for residency.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
The school’s primary clinical partner is the William Osler Health System, one of Ontario's largest community hospital corporations.
Brampton Civic Hospital: A major community teaching hospital and a key site for acute care rotations.
Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness: Focuses on specialized outpatient services and community health.
Etobicoke General Hospital: Provides additional clinical diversity in North Etobicoke.
Community Partners: The school emphasizes "service learning," where students engage with local community agencies to understand the social determinants of health.
State University Affordability
As a new program, specific MD tuition rates are typically aligned with other Ontario medical schools.
Domestic (Ontario Resident) Tuition: Estimated at $25,000 – $28,000 CAD per year (based on standard Ontario MD rates).
Application Fee: Managed through OMSAS (Ontario Medical Schools Application Service), typically around $220 CAD plus school-specific fees.

Vibe: A bustling, multicultural city known as the "Flower City." It has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in Canada.
Transport: Served by Brampton Transit (Züm) and GO Transit, connecting students to Toronto and the surrounding GTA.
Climate: Cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers.
Safety: Generally considered safe and family-oriented, with extensive park systems and a strong community feel.
Brampton Housing: Since the medical school is a new site separate from the main downtown Toronto campus, students typically look for private housing in Brampton.
Rent: Shared apartments or basement suites in Brampton range from $1,000 – $1,500 CAD per month.
On-Campus Options: While TMU has residences in downtown Toronto, medical students are encouraged to live in or near Brampton to be close to their clinical sites.
