The UFR Santé et Développement Durable (Faculty of Health and Sustainable Development) at Université Alioune Diop de Bambey (UADB) is a unique and innovative medical institution in Senegal. Established as part of the university's mission to address community needs, it is known for integrating classical medical training with a strong emphasis on public health, community development, and sustainability.
Established: 2007 (University status in 2011).
Location: Bambey, Diourbel Region, Senegal (approx. 120 km east of Dakar).
Degree Awarded: Diplôme d’État de Docteur en Médecine (Doctor of Medicine).
Duration: 8 Years (inclusive of the L-M-D structure: 3 years for License, followed by Master and Doctorate cycles).
Language of Instruction: French.
Accreditation: Fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of Senegal and recognized by CAMES.
Sustainability Focus: This is one of the few medical faculties in West Africa that specifically links healthcare with "Sustainable Development." The curriculum includes modules on environmental health and community-led development.
Campus Culture: Known for its slogan, "Excellence is my constancy, ethics my virtue," UADB offers a more intimate, rural-focused campus environment than the crowded universities in Dakar.
Architecture: The university buildings are famous for their award-winning, climate-responsive architecture (Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2019), designed to remain cool naturally.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
Clinical Sites: Students conduct rotations at major hospitals in the Diourbel region, specifically the Regional Hospital Center of Diourbel (Heinrich Lübke) and the Regional Hospital of Thiès.
Community-Led Health: A major part of the training takes place in community health centers (Postes de Santé), where students learn to manage healthcare delivery in rural populations.
Multidisciplinary Training: Because the UFR also teaches Community Health, Nutrition, and Environmental Management, medical students often collaborate with other health professionals early in their training.
