The Faculty of Medicine at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) is one of Spain’s youngest and most modern medical schools. Established in 2016, it was designed to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals in the Balearic Islands. The faculty is located on the UIB Campus in Palma, Mallorca, but its clinical heart lies in the island's major hospitals.
The faculty is housed in a modern, purpose-built facility that prioritizes small-group learning and practical simulation.
Clinical Simulation Center: A core part of the training, featuring high-fidelity mannequins and simulated consultation rooms to bridge the gap between theory and hospital practice.
Biomedical Research: Closely linked to the IdISBa (Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands), where students can participate in research projects focused on oncology, cardiovascular health, and neuroscience.
Trilingual Training: To prepare students for the international environment of the Balearic Islands, the curriculum includes a mandatory 1st-year subject: English for Health and Behavioural Sciences.
Leading tertiary care hospital attached to the institution
Medical training is integrated with the IB-Salut (Balearic Health Service). Students rotate through some of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the Mediterranean:
Hospital Universitari Son Espases: The primary teaching hospital and the reference center for the entire archipelago for high-complexity cases.
Hospital Universitari Son Llàtzer: A secondary teaching base focused on integrated care and surgical specialties.
Primary Care Centers: Students spend significant time in the local "Centros de Salud" to master community medicine.
State University Affordability
As a public university, fees are regulated by the regional government. Tuition for the first enrollment is highly competitive.
University Residence (Residència UIB): Located on the main campus (Bartomeu Rosselló-Porcel building).
Cost: Monthly rates for a single room range from €450 to €600 (depending on services).
Facilities: Study rooms, Wi-Fi, laundry, and sports areas.
Shared Flats: Common in Palma. A private room in a shared apartment typically costs €400 – €550 per month.
Dining (Mess): The campus features several cafeterias offering a subsidized "Menú del Dia" for students (approx. €6.50 – €8.50).
Admission to UIB is based strictly on the "Nota de Corte" (Cut-off Score).
Cut-off Score: For 2024/2025, the final access grade was 12.612 out of 14.0. It remains one of the highest entry bars in the Balearic Islands.
UNEDasiss: International students must process their high school credentials through the UNEDasiss portal.
PCE Exams: To achieve the required score, it is essential to take Specific Competency Tests (PCE) in Biology and Chemistry.
Language Proficiency: While some subjects are in English, the clinical interaction with patients is in Spanish and Catalan. A B2 level in both is highly recommended.
