The Department of Medicine is a cornerstone of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at the University of Mauritius (UoM). Established in collaboration with the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the Mauritian Ministry of Health, it is the only public medical school in Mauritius and follows a highly structured, European-style curriculum.
Established: 2004 (Department); 2013 (First MBBS intake).
Location: Academic Complex, Tower Block, Réduit, Mauritius.
Primary Program: Doctor of Medicine (MD) – This is an integrated 6-year program combining a Bachelor of Medicine (Years 1–3) and a Master of Medicine (Years 4–6).
Language of Instruction: English.
Accreditation: Fully recognized by the Medical Council of Mauritius, WHO, and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). It is also approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for Indian students.
The MD program is uniquely designed to provide early clinical exposure and is based on the University of Geneva's medical curriculum.
Phase 1 (Bachelor of Medicine - 3 Years): Focuses on basic sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry) and the introduction of clinical skills through "The Individual, Health, and Society" modules.
Phase 2 (Master of Medicine - 3 Years): Intense clinical training in hospitals.
Research: A mandatory research dissertation is started in Year 4 and submitted by the end of Year 5.
Internship: The 6th year consists of a 10-month full-time student internship (residency) in public hospitals.

Partner Hospitals: Clinical training is primarily conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, Victoria Hospital, and other specialized government hospitals across the island.
Partnership: The collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness ensures students interact with a wide variety of clinical cases, from tropical medicine to advanced surgical procedures.
State University Affordability
International Students:
Part 1 (Bachelor): Approx. $6,000 – $7,000 USD per year.
Part 2 (Master): Approx. $8,000 – $9,500 USD per year.
Note: International applicants must pay the full first-year fees upfront.
National (Mauritian) Students: Eligible for the Government Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), though specific administrative and student union fees (approx. MUR 15,000 – 25,000) still apply.
Education Hub: Moka is known as the "Heart of Education" in Mauritius, home to over 30,000 students and major business parks (Vivea, Bagatelle).
Transport: Free public buses and the Metro Express are available for all full-time students. The Réduit station connects students directly to Port Louis, Rose Hill, and Curepipe.
Atmosphere: A cooler, lush region compared to the coast. It is extremely safe, pedestrian-friendly, and offers a "Smart City" lifestyle with malls like Bagatelle Mall nearby.
Housing: There are no on-campus dormitories at Réduit, but students typically rent private apartments in Moka, Rose Hill, or Quatre Bornes.
Rent: Approx. $200 – $400 USD per month for a shared or studio apartment.
Transport: Free public transport (buses and Metro Express) is available to all students in Mauritius using a student travel card.
Total Monthly Budget: Excluding rent, a student can live comfortably on $250 – $400 USD per month.
Academic Qualification: At least three (3) A-Level passes (A, A, B minimum) in Biology, Chemistry, and either Physics or Mathematics.
NEET (Indian Applicants): Mandatory qualification is required for students intending to return to India to practice.
Age: Minimum 17 years old by December 31st of the year of entry.
Deadline: For the August 2026 intake, the application deadline for international students is February 27, 2026.
Student Visa: Handled by the Passport & Immigration Office (PIO). Students need an offer letter, medical certificate (HIV/Hepatitis/X-Ray), and proof of funds.
NEET (For Indians): Mandatory for those intending to return to India to practice.
Post-Study Work: Mauritius offers a Young Professional Occupation Permit for graduates, allowing them to work in specific sectors for up to 3 years.
