General Information

The University of Medicine, Taunggyi is the fifth and newest public medical school in Myanmar. It opened on October 3, 2015. It was built in the capital of Shan State to decentralize medical education and give students from the Shan and Kayah States specialized training. Even though it was only recently set up, it has quickly become an important center for healthcare development in the eastern mountainous parts of the country.

  • The Sao San Tun General Hospital is the main teaching hospital in Taunggyi and has 500 beds. It is known for its many medical and surgical specialties.
  • Women and Children Hospital (Taunggyi) is a specialized tertiary hospital that trains doctors in obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics.
  • Regional Health Centers: Students take part in a 3-week Residential Field Training (RFT) program in rural Shan State to learn about community and primary healthcare.
