The University of Wollongong runs a medical school with one clear goal. It wants to fix the shortage of doctors in regional, rural, and remote Australia. This goal shapes almost every part of how the school teaches, picks students, and places them for training.

UOW itself started in 1951. Back then, it was a division of the New South Wales University of Technology. It became its own independent university in 1975. Today, UOW sits at 184th in the 2026 QS World University Rankings. This places it in the top one per cent of universities in the world. It ranks thirteenth, particular in the Australia. The university has over 30,000 students. This number includes between 6,000 and 8,000 international students from more than 120 different countries.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) at UOW is a four-year, full-time graduate program. This means you need a finished bachelor's degree first, in any field. No single undergraduate background is preferred over another. Around 109 places open each year across the whole program. Up to 15 of these go to international students. Also, a separate deal reserves 5 places for Kuwaiti citizens sponsored by the Kuwaiti Cultural Office.

International applicants follow their own entry process. You need a weighted GPA from your undergraduate degree. You also need either a GAMSAT score, with a minimum of 50 overall and no section below 50, or an MCAT score. For the most recent intake, UOW uses these test scores as a qualifying hurdle only. This means once you clear the minimum, your exact score stops mattering for ranking. International applicants also sit the CASPer test. This is a situational judgment test. This score, not your GAMSAT or MCAT result, ranks you for an interview offer. Shortlisted candidates then complete an online Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). This checks communication skills, ethical judgment, teamwork, and decision-making in clinical and community settings.

Regarding this particular adjustment, it is important to discuss it. For the most recent intake, the University of Washington completely removed the requirement that applicants submit a written portfolio as part of the admissions process. The University of Wollongong, which was the last medical school in Australia to employ portfolios, continued to use them even after portfolios were discontinued. The manner in which admissions to postgraduate medical programs are handled across the country has undergone a considerable transformation as a result of this.

The program runs across three broad phases. The first 18 months happen at one of three campuses: Wollongong, Shoalhaven, or Southern Highlands. All students attend anatomy sessions at the Wollongong campus roughly once a week. Whole-cohort teaching sessions happen at the Shoalhaven campus roughly once a fortnight. Once you're placed at a campus, you stay there. Transfers between campuses don't happen later. This choice matters early on.

The next year, called Phase 2, moves students into a range of clinical fields. Some students complete this phase at a rural campus instead of a metro one. Phase 3 follows for another year. This phase is built around what UOW calls an integrated clinical clerkship. Every Australian MD student completes this phase in a regional or rural spot, without exception. The final six months focus on working inside real health care teams. This readies students for their internship year.

For domestic students, this rural focus runs deep. Around 70% of UOW medical students complete a full 12-month clinical placement rurally. Almost half of the entire four-year program is taught in rural or regional settings overall. UOW even runs a dedicated Rural Entry Pathway. This reserves most places for students of rural origin. UOW is also the only medical school in New South Wales to get Commonwealth government funding, in 2024, specifically for a rural end-to-end training program.

International students should know one key limit here, though. A rural placement cannot be guaranteed for international students. International students will spend most of their program in the Wollongong and Illawarra region specifically. This differs from most domestic students, who often train rurally. Clinical placements can still run up to a full academic year in length. They may also be required to move to live in that placement community. But the rural guarantee that applies to domestic students doesn't extend to international applicants.

There are also dedicated paths for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. These build around a Community Interview. This interview involves both Indigenous community members and UOW staff. These applicants skip the CASPer or GAMSAT tests. A newer "Return to Community" pathway lets First Nations students complete their Phase 3 clinical placement inside their own community. This is a genuinely rare feature among Australian medical schools.

UOW's results back up its rural and regional focus. Its postgraduate medicine program holds a 5-star rating. It ranked first in Australia for graduates in full-time employment, per the 2025 Good Universities Guide. Plus, UOW ranked fifth among Australian public universities for overall employer satisfaction. It ranked second in New South Wales for this same measure, in the Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching survey, with an overall satisfaction rate of 87.3%.

One practical note for prospective students: Medicine sits outside most of UOW's standard scholarship offers. Along with a small number of other high-demand courses, Medicine gets left out of most of the university's general scholarship schemes. Don't assume a typical UOW scholarship will apply here.

It is also necessary to make an early financial commitment in order to secure a spot. It is necessary for you to send back your acceptance form once you have received an offer. Along with this, you will receive an initial payment of AUD 15,000 in addition to Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which will be issued as soon as possible. For the purpose of confirming your enrollment, the remaining fees for the first semester are needed by a predetermined date.

Graduates leave with a degree backed by the Australian Medical Council. From there, every graduate completes a stretch of supervised pre-vocational training. This is called an internship, and the NSW Health Education and Training Institute oversees it. Finishing this training leads to registration as a medical practitioner in New South Wales. Also, it opens the door to registration across Australia and New Zealand. UOW's own materials note that graduates go on to further training in countries like Canada, the USA, the UK, and New Zealand, too.

It is a coastal city that is recognised for having prices that are noticeably lower than those of Sydney. Wollongong is located approximately 80 kilometres south of Sydney, which is approximately 90 minutes away by road or rail. Wollongong provides a laid-back lifestyle that is close to the beach, while yet providing easy access to the larger metropolis when it is required.

International students should go in with an understanding of one key trade-off. You'll spend most of your training in the Wollongong and Illawarra region itself. This differs from the deep rural rotations many domestic students get. Still, you'll train inside a program with a genuinely strong name for graduate jobs and a clear, mission-driven identity among Australia's medical schools.
