Weizmann Institute of Science School of Medicine

- Rehovot, Israel
Abroad

General Information

Established in 2024 and launching its first class in October 2025, the Gutwirth Medical School represents a historic shift for the Weizmann Institute traditionally a pure research institution into the realm of medical education. This elite, highly specialized school was founded to bridge the widening gap between basic scientific discovery and clinical application. It offers a unique 7.5-year MD-PhD program (the first of its kind in Israel to be fully integrated from day one) designed to train physician-scientists. By combining Weizmann’s world-class research infrastructure with clinical training at Israel's top hospitals, the school aims to produce leaders who can solve urgent medical challenges using the tools of exact sciences, data science, and AI.

General Info

  • Established: 2024 (Inaugural class: October 2025).
  • Primary Location: > Weizmann Institute Campus, Herzl St 234, Rehovot, Israel.
  • Academic Model: Integrated MD-PhD.
  • Structure: A 7.5-year program (plus internship) for students who already hold an undergraduate or graduate degree:
  • Phase 1: Foundations (Year 1): Intensive core medical sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology) combined with computational skills (Python, R, Statistics).
  • Phase 2: Research & PhD (Years 2-5): Full immersion in one of Weizmann’s 250+ labs. Students maintain clinical relevance through weekly "Medical Research Education" sessions.
  • Phase 3: Clinical Clerkships (Years 6-7.5): 77 weeks of intense clinical rotations in major Israeli hospitals.
  • Instruction: Primarily Hebrew (clinical) and English (research). Students are expected to be fluent in both, as research at Weizmann is conducted entirely in English while patient care is in Hebrew.
  • Research Focus: Unparalleled access to all scientific disciplines including Physics, Chemistry, Math, and Computer Science not just Biology.
  • Admission: Extremely selective. Admits up to 40 students annually (the inaugural 2025 class was smaller due to regional constraints). Candidates are evaluated on academic excellence, research potential, and clinical empathy through a multi-stage interview process.
